Chicken Houses

Postby leadsthebest » Thu Feb 28, 2008 10:14 am

I have a neighbor that is trying to sell her house and land. I have heard that there is someone that is looking at buying it and putting chicken houses on the land next to me. Have any of y'all had this problem or do any of you live near a chicken house?

Thanks

I've heard people say that it is more rank than a pig farm, especially when the wind shifts in your due direction. Had some friends in college that used to clean the houses as a summer job and they were usually the ones going in the grease pit at the fraternity house - said it was like flowers compared to chicken poop!
On the upside, you may get free yard bird out of the deal.....

May smell like $$$ to them, but it will make my house and land value decrease. Which smells like $#!+ to me!!!

Is there anything that I can do? They have not even bought the land yet, but I want to be ready if they do. Hopefully they will not.

I know one thing you can do...buy the land.

My inlaws had neighbors build four right across from their place in Jasper Co. and of course they weren't too happy but you just have to live with it. For them, the property value issues arent what bothers them because it is their home place and won't ever sell...it is more of a quality of life issue....always hearing the fans running outside and the occasional wind that bring the odor.

Another thing you could do is tell the potential buyer about a farm that I know of that is really nice and is for sale.

Here's a little info

I would contact MDEQ and ask them if there is any way you can object to it.

Well if you do get stuck with the guy putting chicken houses there. First you can ask if he would not build them there that you are concerned about resale of the property and if he gets an attitude and becomes a booty. Just let him build them and when he gets his first delivery of chicks just ease over there one night and unplug the heater or ac for the house and he wont be in business very long!!!!!!!   It will kill every chicken in the house before the sun comes up.... :D :D :D

I know, I found it hard to believe myself. I grew up less than 1/4 mile from a hog pen that I had to pass everyday on my 3 wheeler on the way to our farm shop, & less than a mile from a catfish plant. With the weather just right, either was bad, but both of them together would run you back inside the house and fearful that the stinch would stick to you if you were going to a respectable establishment! I think the catfish lagoon was worse than the pig sty, though.

Its not the best of times to be getting in the chicken business. With the price of feed(Corn) it's tough to make money.

Either buy the land, or move....

Sounds harsh, but thats your only option.

And with a 5% wind and hail deductible on the houses it is rough. 5% on a $600,000 house = $30,000 ded.

Just built a new house on family land that is right next to the property that is being sold for the chicken houses. We built this house last year to live in for the rest of our lives. So I can not afford to buy the land, nor do I want to move. Plus who would buy a new house next to chicken $#!+?

THis is not a done deal yet, just hear say. I really doubt that they will get built, but I just want to be prepared in case we have to fight this.

Thanks for your responses.
