Question about deer stand

Postby Double Deuce » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:53 am

I have a 50 acre crp field where the grass stands about 5 to 6 ft high. I am in the process of putting a box stand in the field, and will have a greenfields planted in strips but can't decide if I should have the box stand a few feet off the ground or build it about 10 feet off the ground so I can see most of the field. I guess im concerned that the stand might bother the deer if its very high being that it is in an open field. Has anybody put a stand up in a similar situation and seen a negative effect on the deer activity. Suggestions would be very appreciated.

Given time the deer will get used to the stand and it will not bother them.

All of our stands are about 20 to 25 feet in the air. All in crp fields. The deer will get used to it after a while. Put it up now and they will be used to it in a few weeks.

The higher the better, 2/3's of our camp is in WRP, we have box stands ranging from 15 to 25 feet and killing big bucks has never been a problem out of any of them. Deer dont pay them any attention after awhile. You will kick yourself if you put it on the ground looking over a grass/weild field in the long run I promise you.

Are there any trees planted or is it just going to be grass? The higher you are the more you will be able to see if it's just grass. If it has trees on it then they are going to really limit your view in about 5 years and I wouldn't go above 10 or 15 feet.

its all grass fields and what trees that are on it are young and have been sprayed so they wont be any problem.

It's a little late to worry about putting up a deer stand isn't it?
