No season?
I believe that most organizations, including DU, are inherently honest. But, there are too many individuals in the organizations who look on the organization as being their domain to be protected and, in doing that, they create a beuracracy instead of an effective conservation organization. Too many "mushroom management" practicioners for my taste. You know, "Keep 'em in the dark and feed them manure!" Way too much manure in the governmental agencies affecting wildlife and habitat, as well as the private agencies. I hate to see Delta going "commercial" with banquets because when it starts being about raising money, it cannot be as purely about raising ducks. Dang, I'm feeling cynical today. Oh, well, it is Monday!

Then why did they place a moratorium on the killing of canvasbacks - again? Because the last time they implemented a no-kill rule on canvasbacks it resulted in more canvasbacks?
IMHO the compensatory theory is highly overstated. There's an opinionated article on teh issue at http://www.madduck.com
I think that if they reduced the limit to 1 or 0 ducks based on population data that rather than less money going into conservation via DU and DELTA that concerned sportsman might actually contribute more.

Now I am going to have to agree/disagree w/ GBruce. I think that the overall population would increase quite a bit, but on the other hand, it would not increase as much as we think it would. There are a limited number of nesting areas in the PPH region. We would put a lot more ducks on nest and get more ducks, but there would still be a lot of ducks that don't nest or try to nest for a second time when their first nest if destroyed. A holiday inn built for 200 people to sleep in will hold a lot more people, but only sleep 200.
Crow I wouldn't worry about DW getting "commercialized". There are some good people(upper management) in DW that believe in what DW is trying to do. They want the money to do what they are doing now on a larger scale. I have met and talked to Rob Olson, Jon Devney, and Mike Nevins. If Rob and Jon keep their goals the same, and Mike delivers them the money they need, DW will give suzy mallard a better chance to raise her clutch. I met these guys in Memphis back in December and talking to them is like talking to my neighbors. They are duck hunters that want to improve the present status of duck hunting and build a brighter future for duck hunting. I bet you can't call the president of DU right now and talk to him on the phone. Try Rob or Jon, they will listen if there is any way possible. I am agreeing with you in the way that one bad apple can spoil the barrel. I think that is what happened to DU. But I will give DU the benefit of the doubt. They are trying to right the ship.
