2004 Z71 115k let me down

Postby Hayes » Mon Sep 17, 2007 9:14 pm

Bought this truck brand new in december of 03 i go from columbus to starkville every day for work along with many hunting trips and have racked up over 115k miles. Never had much problem and always kept it serviced. Today on the way home the engine alarm went off and engine was overheating, I am hoping it was the thermastat and not the water pump but we will see tomorrow

115k and that is the only problem shoot.. Not bad IMO.. By the way.. I had a thermostat go out on the way from South Texas to Jackson.. Started getting hot at around Houston.. You can limp em back.. Just start turning everything off... When it started I was running 80MPH and AC a blowing.. By the time I got to JXN I had to slow down to about 55 MPH and windows rolled down..

I had an 04 Z-71, at about 80,000 miles it started overheating due to coolant leaking. I put in the shop 3 or 4 times and after a water pump, new radiator, and a lotta pain in the ass, it still was leaking. Hope you figure yours out.

You can help keept it cool by cutting on the heater, it acts like a radiator, and will force water thru even if the thermostat or water pump goes out. I would not do it for very long but it will help you make it to the next town.

9 times out of 10 your radiator will be stopped up with grass or mud and bugs. Wash that out and have your fan clutch checked they go out at 100k.

along the lines of torchs' comment. take the radiator out and have it rodded out. that will help tremendously. i had it done to my 97 ford and never had another problem until i hit the ass end of that semi trailer on the bridge  .
if that had not happened i would still be driving it....but it was totalled by insurance and i could not turn down 7000.00 dollars for a 2000.00 dollar truck :D

good luck

Hayes it shouldn't cost 1 cent over 400.00 for new water pump and thermostat.

My water pump went out at 41000 mi. on the same model truck. Just my luck, right after the warranty went out.
