Z-71 speedometer problem

Postby marshman » Sun May 13, 2007 8:29 pm

Today all of a sudden the speedometer on my 04 GMC started acting up. With the motor running but in park the speedometer says I'm doing between 10-15 mph. It even stays there after the truck is turned off. Anyone else had a problem like this or knows whats wrong?

My dad's 04 had the same problem. There was a major glitch in the 04 speedometer setup. I believe it's like $500 to fix it.

Save your reciepts if you get it repaired, they might put out a recall on it and you can get your money back.

Thanks for the replies. If I get it fixed I will save receipts. Bad thing is that its about $450 more than I need and want to spend right now.

There's a guy on ebay that will fix it for $100. Search for speedometers and his name will come up.

Just use your GPS to figure out what speed corepsponds to various RPM levels. Once you've gotten this learned, you can use your tack as your speedometer and save the $500.

Have a an 04 z 71 and my guage cluster went out and I have no spedometer, no rpm gauge, no gas gauge, Good thing I have the range on my electric panel display telling me how far i have till i am empty.

I took my truck to the chevy place they said it was the gauge cluster and would cost 400+ to fix.

NOPE!!! Mine is a much older truk.

My wife has an 04 chevy Impala and I drove it into the driveway and noticed the speed at 101, should have seen what the sucker did on the highway!!!

Took the dealer 20 minutes to fix it, usually takes 4 hrs. for them to get my name. Good Luck

PS It was under warranty, truk is paid for, guess they know she will get a new car before I ever get another truk.

This is very common with GM trucks. I spoke with two seperate dealer service managers about this issue recently. Both told me they've done over a hundred of these already this year. And you wonder why GM can't make any money.

Yea, I have an 04 z71 and my does it off and on. Mine will only do it during cold weather, the speed ometer we say I am doing 100 when I am barely moving. Im not gonna get it fixed if it cost $500. Mine also the air conditioner will sometimes stop working, you can stop cut the truck off, turn it back on and then the air conditioner will be back working fine. Several of my display lights have gone out on my dash also. I will def not be going back with a Chevy truck. Oh yea I have had several problems with my 4 wheel drive service light coming on (4 wheel drive still works fine though)

my 03 GMC does it as well, usually after cruise control has been on for a while. worse in cold weather.
