I tell my wife duck season costs as much as her trip to beach with the girls. She doesn't b@#ch too much after I remind her about that trip. Oh yeah, what she don't know, don't hurt.

I've spend over 2 grand for 2 trips, total of 5 days hunting and 14 ducks and 1 goose bagged. I love it but dang...$$$$!!

Counting nothing else, I have at least $30K tied up in my bay boat and gator trax. Not to mention a couple thousand goose decoys, duck decoys, five pirouges (yes you never can have too many!), Guns, dogs, dog training/traveling expenses, leases, gas, camp, food. I bet I could buy a nice house by the time I was done!

I refuse to add it up. Instead, I calculate how much fun I have and just for numbers sake, I guess at how much money I DIDN'T spend - how much I save by using holdovers from last year, how much it would cost me to do something else that isn't as enjoyable, etc.

Since it was a slow year I refunded all my guiding charges and am still waiting on that deadbeat to pay me for training his dogs  .

Just make sure you meet the business rules and don't get your business turned into a hobby. Otherwise, the IRS will reverse all of your deductions. There's a little guide they follow about turning a profit 3 out of 5 years and being able to make a profit. Just don't want anyone getting into trouble.

Someone once told me never try to figure out how much a duck cost. I take that advise.

It costs me so much that it is necessary to lie to the wife.

Couple boxes of shells and a cord of firewood. This year I will need a new pair of waders so I'll roll that cost into the 07-08 season.
