Crazy Dog.

Postby rustypjr » Wed Jan 17, 2007 10:45 am

Got a question about feeding. Not how much but how the dog acts. Here is the situation lets take this morning for instance. I get up and let hte dog out to "Go Pee" . Come back and take the food bowl put it on the counter fill with water and food. (one of them combo bowl) I make her sit. When she has sat for about 5 - 10 seconds I set the bowl down. She grabs a mouth fool and slings on the kitchen floor and then eats it one piece at a time on the floor. She does that about 3 more times. then she eats at the bowl for about 20 seconds and then she goes to her spot and lays down or runs around the house for about 5 minuttes and then goes and repeats the whole process over. What can I do? I want her to eat it when I sit it down and not play around. this morning I stood over he and everytime she moved I said no and pt her back in front of the bowl. But is there something else i cold do? She does this everytime she eats. No matter if it has been 6 hours or 12 hours.

When she leaves the bowl for the first time take the food up and give her what she did not eat tonight. Repeat the pick up rule. In a week she will get hungry and empty the bowl when it is put in front of her.

Make sure she gets plenty of excerise. Be it walks, play-time with the big dogs(not too long tho), etc. Routine is a LARGE factor in a dogs happiness.

I had one that wasn't too interested in food as a youngster but it should change. I would sit with him at his bowl and when he got preoccupied and started to wander I would encourage him back and refocus him on his food. That worked.

Keep your routine and pick up what dog doesn't eat and put it away.

Tip: Might try putting warm water on the food. It makes a 'gravy' so to speak and the dogs tend to like it ALOT.

Exactly, pick up the food she doesn't eat. By the time a few days go around she'll be eating it all with no problem! Good Luck!

Is there a logistics reason why you want her to eat it all at once?

Does it hurt a dog to eat a little here and there?

My pup will eat, goof off, eat goof off, eat and so forth.

She doesn't gobble it up.

Just curious?

Travling with a dog that knows to eat when the food is put down or lose it it much easier that traviling with one that wants to pick at it all day.

What if you go to the duck camp and other dogs are there? Will your dog get to eat when he want to through out the day? No, another dog will come along and eat his food.

It just makes for an easier time if they learn to eat it when it is put down.

exactly. And if another dog leaves its food out when mine is around, my pup will make it dissappear in about a second!

Well we started picking it up when she runs away from it. Now she throws it all over the floor one time then she stays at her bowl and eats till it is gone. So I guess it worked.

That is a long time. It takes my dog about a minute maybe two to eat four cups of food.
