The 11-87 takes more maintenance than any other gun. The 11-87 has always had problems ejected light load dove shells. The best advice I can give you is to shoot heavier loaded dove shells to stop the problems.

The 1187 is a fine weapon..remove the bolt slide and trigger group...clean all of those parts real good as well as the receiver cavity...also take the butt plate off and remove the return spring assy and see if it is rusted real bad.....clean it all the way and check your O-ring replace if needed. Remember when you put it back together not to pinch the O-ring with the fore-arm people do it all the time and that can do it really quick...use a fine steel wool on the spring if you find bad rust.....Good Luck

GH22-
You often make some wide ranging assertions about things on this sight.
I've shot an 11-87 for years and never had any unusual maintenance problems nor any problems ejecting light loads.
BB- What are you cleaning the mechanisms with?

Be sure to use a quality lubricant. WD40 is ok in some situations. I use a tube of lubricant called Gunslick, and it is great. Looks like heck as it is black, but works wonders when worked into the metal works of an autmatic. Also doesn't react in cold weather like liquid lubricants do.

For the inards I use gas with a light oil mixture so when it dries it leaves a light oil film...not so much as to gunk things up.

If you are shooting a 11-87 3" mag gun, you won't have many problems. The 3 1/2 mag. gun has major problems. A couple of my friends went and bought the 11-87 SP 3.5" autos before dove season. Ten minutes into the hunt I had to go back to the house and get some more guns cuz theirs wouldn't eject the dove loads. And they had been cleaned by a gunsmith, which was requested by the gun seller. The Remington shotguns are good guns, but can get on your nerves sometimes. I've got a 1100 that will shoot any shell until you clean it, go figure. If you use WD-40 during cold weather it will freeze up the gun in a new york minute. I've been using the de-icer spray for a couple of years now and it works.

The 11-87 SuperMagnum I've shot (right outa the box) kicked out the 7/8 oz. promotional dove loads like clockwork..my 3" 11-87 does the same as well..
IMHO, most folks OVER-OIL their S/A's..I use either RemLube or Hoppes DriLube on the internal moving parts (shoot them "dry") and NEVER use WD-40 inside of any gun..would'nt even do that to a MossyBack.

It's the ejection seat, I tell ya'. If you go into a flat spin, and the canopy blows off but still hangs right over the cockpit, you'll go straight up and smack it everytime. Remember what happened to Goose? And none of us want to go through that again..........does this help?

contrary to some opinions I think the 11-87 is a fine firearm or it wouldn't enjoy the sucess in sales volume that it does. when disassembling use carburator cleaner to de-grime the parts but don't get it on the o-ring. after using this product try a quality oil such as BREAK-FREE CLP it'll stay with you even when wet. also with the barrel off check the gas vents in the ring and make sure they are clear. but as I believe someone eluded to earlier, pay attention to the action spring in the buttstock. prime place that is often overlooked when cleaning. if the spring is rusted it has probably lost some of its tension properties and will have to be replaced. hope some of this helps. feel free to e-mail me if you need any help or a ph. #.
