Food Plots
Food Plots
I was wondering what you fellas thought about food plots. I hunt on private land and the owner told me that I could plant some food plots. I was just wondering what did ya'll think was best and when is the best time to plant? Thanks for all the help in advance..
Food Plots
Have not planted anything for ducks in quite
a few years, but plant yearly for deer. I feel it gives them a little extra & I have
seen better bucks the past couple of years.
Start with a soil sample which yoour county
extension office will send to MSU for a
small fee, this tells you if/how much
lime & fertilizer your soil needs.
You can check with your local seed/feed store
or again the extension office/county agent
for recommended plant dates/rates/depths.
I usually prepare the soil by disking in late august/early september. This allows the
existing vegetation to die/decay. Apply fertilizer & disk again. Then wait for rain
and as soon as dry enough broaadcast seed &
harrow or drag over to cover seed.
This allows young tender vegetation for early
bow season & most plots last throughout the
hunting season.
Have had good luck with wheat/rye grass.
Have tried oats, Austrian winter peas, various greens, & Mossy-Oak Biologic.
The biologic grew well , but costs quite a bit more than other seed, & the deer loved it
soo much that within 3 weeks of finding it had overgrazed it so that it became non productive.
