Public Land
Public Land
Does the state of MS routinely seek out new lands to purchase for the intent of adding public hunting opportunities?
I know in AR they are constantly adding new land to the nwr's. I'd love to see an increase in usable public lands and stop crossing that bridge to deal with all the new $#!+ rules they implement in AR every year. Of course, I haven't purchased a wma permit in MS since they implemented the draw either... Guess I'm bitching just to bitch

The MDWFP is always looking to purchase land to either add to an existing WMA or to create a new WMA.

Re: Public Land
The only land I’m aware of the state having bought recently is Canemount. And it’s a lottery only for deer and turkey, plus a $300 fee if you do get drawn. Seems like I remember seeing there isn’t even a time when squirrel hunting is wide open, so I don’t really consider it a new public hunting opportunity.
I know you’re more interested in waterfowl areas ... There was talk last fall of the state trying to buy a bunch of land in the South Delta.

Re: Public Land
The MDWFP has also added land to WMAs in recent years like Copiah County WWA, Charles Ray Nix, Black Prairie, Pascagoula River.

Re: Public Land
Trip, yes they do. They have added some places and are working on others. Hell they have been trying to buy a large tract in the south delta and could never agree on price. The state wanted it so bad they "found" a CWD deer case to help drive the prices even lower

Re: Public Land
Well it would sure help me out if they would buy a 10-15k acres in the north delta so I didn't have to drive so far

Re: Public Land
Are they allowed to buy land on the open market or do they have to go through some type of bureaucratic nightmare bidding process?

Re: Public Land
Can buy it on the open market. Can only pay appraised value. Still plenty of red tape.

Speaking of, you sure don't hear anything else out of the CWD $#!+ anymore. Why not? What's the deal with itdeltadukman wrote:Trip, yes they do. They have added some places and are working on others. Re: Public Land
just about everything in the containment zone been underwater since just after the found it....
Re: Public Land
Yeah, I knew that it has been underwater but I'm wondering what is going on, is there a plan now that the water is sort of down. Have they been sampling more deer, the levees are a good place to take some samples at night...so I been told!
My prediction is this is the last we will hear of CWD and will not find another infected deer.
Oh did the price of that land drop enough for the state to get it from ATCO yet?

Re: Public Land
You want to take a gander at the cost the state has incurred to handle all this testing, sampling, etc.?
Anyone seeing land prices in the area impacted by this?

Re: Public Land
Friend of mine talked to a guy this week that was hired by the state to appraise 18k acres in that area. My question is if we have to declare a state of emergency for our roads and bridges why in the heck is the state willing to drop this kind of money on some land?dukhntn wrote:Rumor has it they may have gotten some...420 racin wrote: Oh did the price of that land drop enough for the state to get it from ATCO yet?
