Turkey Mount Question

My son killed his first gobbler this year and I want to do a homemade fan mount. I have done several of these, but my question is about the spurs. They were some good sharp ones 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 and sharp. I would like to add this to his mount. Should I try to get the scaly skin off the spurs, or just let them be? If so, what is the best method? I know that sooner or later, they will begin to fall off. Thoughts?

Leave it. The way I've done them in the past is to get as much meat off the knuckle area as possible, and put them somewhere out of reach of kids and animals where they can breath, covered in borax. In a few weeks they will be dry and preserved.

I saw mine off just below the knuckle and leave them alone once they get good and dry their fine. I have a pair of feet from a turkey I killed 10 yrs ago and they still look fine.

I do the same. Take it down to bone. Then write on the backs of them with a small sharpie where I killed them. A pair of pliers and one of those cheap white paring knives works great.
