Microsoft Outlook ???

Postby SNOT » Wed Jan 15, 2014 2:39 pm

My Outlook email runs very slow for some reason----if I want to delete an email it takes forever most of the time to delete, same thing if I want to transfer an email from the inbox to a folder---a lot of times when I try to open or send an email it will say 'Outlook not responding at the top' then finally send it after 10-15 seconds....any way to fix this???

What version of Outlook (2013, 2010, 2007)?
What email provider are you useing (company exchange server, pop3, gmail, yahoo, etc)?
What version of Windows (8, 7, XP, etc)?

It's 2010 Outlook-Windows 7 and I think pop3 but not sure---how can I find that out??

Tools-->Account Settings and it will say under the account properties

My guess is your PST is somewhat corrupt. Need to run scanpst.exe against it to clean up the issues.

1st thing i'd do is delete your .ost or offline folder.
Then reopen, we deal with it everyday here at our help desk.
If that doesn't clear it up then run the scanpst as suggested.

Here's a link on where to find scanpst.

PST or OST file. If it's pop3, if try the repair. If you delete it like boovan said, all your data is gone unless you have it set to save it all on the server. Not worth the risk unless you know for sure.
My repair util is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\scanpst.exe
You'rs may or may not have the (x86) part of the file path.

You'll need to look at the file path of your ost / pst files. The fastest way to open the folder where your Outlook Data File (.pst and .ost) is saved is to do the following:
1. In Outlook 2010, click the File tab.
2. Click "Account Settings", and then click "Account Settings" from the drop down menu.
3. On the "Data Files" tab, highlight a file, and then click Open Folder Location.

WAIT WAIT WAIT DO NOT DELETE anything!!! If you are connected to an Exchange Server you might try to just create a new Outlook profile and set up your account in it also. It will download all of your email again. If it a POP account and you delete the PST that stuff is GONE except for what is set to stay on the server. POP accounts are not intended to store a lot of email on the server. Exchange server accounts are meant to keep the master copy on the server and just update the copy on your computer (OST file) and your phone, iPad, etc. Again DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!

If you want your computer to run correctly and efficiently without all the free antivirus stuff conflicting and updating and potentially missing something, let Ronnie come out and clean it up and install his antivirus stuff that he monitors. We had all kinds of issues in our office as we don't really monitor what people look at. Our women have all kinds of stuff downloaded and will click any link if it says "sale". Since he did his thing, we have had 0 issues and it has saved us a ton of money.

If he's on an exchange server, he's fine as long as he deletes the .ost file.
I didn't see where anyone said to delete the .pst file?

Outlook puts POP3 accounts in a PST, not an OST.

I know I was just getting him to pump the brakes on deleting stuff (even and OST file) until we could guide him in the right direction. Some people get click happy :D
