I know it's illegal to sell shine in our state, but is it illegal to make it for your own consumption?

yep, must have a distilling license in either fuel or alcohol form. The fuel permit is free and you can make up to 10k gallons yr tax free

FYI, that there permit is also basically giving the authorities open access to your property at their will. Ya gotta have it denatured and they are very strict about what they consider materials that are for consumption. Basically you're better off just trying to do it illegally if you're making it for consumption.

But to get real basic, if a fellow is on his homestead, it ain't no lawman's or lawmaker's damned business what a fellow is doing long as he's keepin to himself and not bothering anybody.

Course, this guy is an exception. Obviously his actions could've burned several others' possessions to the ground. Maintenance man is probably a democrat. Or republican for that matter. Damn sure aint no libertarian.

Yep, essentially it gives them open invite to drop in investigation similar to what FFL holders are held to.
