Re: Honda pioneer atv
I looked into them hard when they were coming out, even had brookhaven hold me one for a day. They have the exact same motor as the big red but it is mounted differently. If you have ever road a big read you have heard the engine noise... that was fixed by the change is what the dealer told me. Some folks say it is underpowered but every big red I have ever been in seemed to have plenty of power. I really like the design of the 2 seater but the 4 seater looked cramped. I chickend out cause I wanted someone like you to buy one so I can see how it held up for a year or so before I made the investment. So go ahead and let me ride

Does the new Honda have a high/low range setting......have not driven one , but one of our members was looking and it was an issue for him ?????????

Re: Honda pioneer atv
I have a friend with one and he took his on a trail ride in Colorado. The terrain wasn't an issue but it wouldn't handle the altitude. Had to have it towed across a pass or two. He hasn't been pleased with it's performance at home since then either. I carried my mid-sized Ranger to pull him out of the mud Friday night. He isn't happy.
Re: Honda pioneer atv
if it is ANYTHING like the Big Red.... Forget it!!! weakest utv on the market.... and i have owned a boat load of honda fourwheelers so this isnt coming from a bias person... but i hope they have improved their UTV

Re: Honda pioneer atv
Well, I actually have one. A P2. The second one sold in South MS. It rides different than a Big Red, different tranny and frame, same engine. I hate to give actual "real world" observations in the face of "I know this dudeisms" that you read about these all over the 'net, but here I go.
If you are "Grab my crotch gotta be there first guy" you won't like it. If you are "gotta sling the most mud with 30" silverbacks guy" you won't like it. It won't outrun a Ranger 800, but will keep up with it until you hit the obnoxious rev limiter at 45 mph. It will also pull a stuck ranger out of a bean field.
If you are "I want it to crank every time, keep it in water and not smoke a belt guy," you will probably like it a lot. It does not have a low range, it has a torque converter like a car. You will find it difficult to spin tires due to the gearing of the tranny. Which is weird, 'cause of how much torque it has. I smell a lawyer design team. However, it will crawl its way through stuff that would have stuck my OLD Ranger. I have no "new" Ranger for comparison. It will not really "blast its way out" of mud due to the tranny, but I am frequently surprised where I can take it. Folks that know me will tell you I EXCELL at getting things stuck, I hunt hard and often in beans and mud, and I have not stuck this yet, but have had a bow wave of water coming over the dash and been scared crapless. On the other hand, if I WANTED to get this (or any other SxS stuck), I surely could. I don't find it "underpowered" at all, since it will pull like a freaking mule. The electronic tranny is DIFFERENT though, you do need to drive one, down a steep hill if you can. It is the quietiest SxS I have been in, but none of them are going to win "the quiet game" since there are so many more surfaces to reflect sound on a SxS. Every person that has driven mine has really liked it, including Ranger, Rhino and Teryx owners. I would like to see a 900 Pioneer, because I always want a little more power. If you gave me 1,500 cc, I would wonder about 1,700. But so far I am really happy with my Pioneer 700, other than the STUPID rev limiter, and how tall the roll bars are, measure your garage clearance before you take it home. Power Commander: I am waiting on that rev limiter by-pass fix.

VERY GOOD review!!! Glad to know they changed the tranny cause that thing was a nightmare on even the slightest cold morning in the BIg RedGulfCoast wrote:Well, I actually have one. A P2. Oh, because the tranny uses engine oil for lubricant, you do have to let it run a couple minutes before using it on really cold mornings. I don't find that to be any big deal.

Thanks for the review...sounds like what I want....was really worried about how it performed in the mud and water.

Re: Honda pioneer atv
Thanks for taking the time to write that up gulfcoast. Your experience sounds very similar to others I read today on some atv forums. Seems that people that say it's under powered are comparing to a polaris 900 or can am. I don't think the honda was meant to compete with those and it's price reflects that too.
Re: Honda pioneer atv
I'd be care full with changing the REV limiter.. Allowing it to turn more..Those engines are built for low REVs and torque..
I would have guessed with EFI high altitude would not be a problem like a carb..IDK.. I'd hate to know the computer would need re-mapping everytime..
I'd love to have a pioneer..

Re: Honda pioneer atv
The honda's will never be as powerful as any of the others.
Honda puts just enough power to get the machine to do it's duties on hard pack ground.
Watch the front axles on them though, i know of 3-4 that have broken them with stock tires.
For the money look at the new 570 Ranger, should do whatever you need.

Re: Honda pioneer atv
Honda is VERY safety concious after all the 3 wheeler suits. Sometimes to a fault. The Pioneer is not a v-twin, grab-booty and go vehicle, and not designed or marketed that way. Its a bargain at its price (the P2, I think the 4 seater is a solution in search of a problem), but the Honda accessories are GOUGINGLY expensive. Thank goodness for KFI, saved me $300 on a winch mount.
I know several folks out west that have run them at pretty decent altitude. Thing to remember, is that they all lose x% of power per 1,000 feet. However, I would be pissed if mine crapped out short of 13,000 feet. Mine does great at 10 feet above sea level!
