Liquor in Brandon, MS
Re: Liquor in Brandon, MS
Thats what i hear.... and quite frankly im with you and think thats kinda saddeltadukman wrote:The saddest part of it all is this is the only thing that gets people out and to vote. There were more people turn out for this vote than the last Presidential election as well as the last Mayorial election or any other election that I know about.

I have disagree with the numbers bc I think it was a poor turnout. There was a ruff 5000 votes. For a town of 24000+ ( I know that includes kids) but I would say that there are about 12000 voters and less than half showed up is awfull. The last presidential election was crazy in my ward. Lines were hours long. I'm glad it passed

It passed but ain't going to be an answer for Brandon. Just more chain restaurants if that. Why would they come to brandon vs Floowood or pearl where there is shopping etc and more to offer. Residents of Brandon aren't going to draw and keep high end restaurants. They will still go to Floowood or Madison for that. Madison, Floowood, pearl, folks ain't driving to brandon to eat. I hope whatever comes will stay on 18 and not come downtown. The traffic can't take anymore in downtown. They need to designate an area like pearl did. Make 18 the new 25!! At least Azteca can get margaritas going!!!!! Brandon needs to really capitalize on the ballparks as a draw and put as much as they can into expanding that to draw out of town folks etc before it to goes to Floowood and Madison. The zoo is already hinting at Floowood, which would be great!!!!!!!

For one, there is no more room to put anything new downtown. Actually they are looking to re-establish downtown and make it nice through the overlay project. What may end up there, and I hope it does, is a nice restraunt in the Thompson building. They are working on sidewalks, and mixed use zoning with retail and living space above it. Take this survey if you're intrested in having an opinion on the look of downtown.

On the parks and rec deal, the vote yesterday and the 2% tax deal was somewhat contingent upon one another. For starters we do have nice ball fields. We also have many baseball and soccer tournaments played there where the out of town families go to pearl or flowood to stay and eat. We have nothing other than ballfields to offer them. This thing is 2-fold. The 2% grows the parks and rec department, and the liquor by the glass entices a few more hotels other than the ones that smell like curry powder, and we have nicer places to eat. The people stay and spend their money here. It wont happen overnight, its a slow and steady process. Things are contingent upon other things.

I would like to see a good, locally owned , restaurant in the old Thompson building. But the living space above it... Years ago.. Probably 15 or so I was ask to give an estimate on what kinda money it would cost to put those apartments to use.. About halfway through the estimate it was decided that the cost was way to much for the return. But it would be a great restoration project.

They are looking exactly for that. A nice local steakhouse or something. That's what they are hoping they can entice to go there. They are wanting to bring back downtown and I think that's a great idea!

I would love for it to be like the downtown strip in Starkville, the square in Oxford or many other nice down town areas. Both residential and nice dining within walking distance of Old Brandon. Heck not to sound like a yuppy but I think people in a few mile radious might even walk or ride a bike to something like that if there is something to draw them and there is enough sidewalk to make this possible.chs36 wrote:I would like to see a good, locally owned , restaurant in the old Thompson building. I think Waymon, owner of Brandon Disc. owns that building. Sure he'd sell it for the right price.

Ah, maybe I'm thinking about one of the other surrounding buildings then. I know one came up for sale and he bought it to keep another pharmacy from coming in but that was a few years back.deltadukman wrote:edub20 wrote:JLT wrote:While ya'll are brain storming figure out something for the old M&F building by Brandon Discount Drugs.
