New Gun
I've sold my old rifle to buy a new one. I had my mind made up that I was getting a 700 sps 7mm-08 in stainless and synthetic. I've got a little extra to spend that what I originally planned, so I thought I might upgrade rifles. I want to stay with a stainless finish and in a 7mm-08. What rifle would you all recommend for under $1,000?

For that kind of money you could move up to the Browning Xbolt.

Re: New Gun
You could buy an Encore frame and then slap a MGM barrel on it.
If you know someone that can re-barrel a gun, you might want to consider finding a used Remington 700 action and then fit a new Krieger barrel for it. I am about to do that with a gun now.
Both of these options would likely be more accurate than an out of the box 700 SPS.

I've got a Remington 700 in 7-08 mountain rifle I'm interested in selling. Not stainless, but a pretty gun with a couple dings in the wood.

Wasn't blown away by the x-bolt. Almost like the a-bolts better. If I didn't have to spend a grand I don't have to. Was just looking for y'all's opinion on something that may be better than the 700. Appreciate y'all's thoughts and will look into the suggestions.

Re: New Gun
Rem 700 is best bolt action rifle period ! stick with the Remington.
Re: New Gun
Look at the savage or tikka by far the best two rifles out of the box for the money in my opinion (and i shoot a remingtion but there quality control is not what it use to be). Brownings are overrated and overpriced
Re: New Gun
Look for a Stevens 200....it is a savage 110 without an acutrigger. They sell for about $300-350 new in box. You could swap barrels, stock and trigger and still have money left over but with the accuracy of the stock rifle you may just stop at the trigger.

This^^ and use the left over $$$ to put towards some quality glass.
Re: New Gun
If you can find one, the rem 700 titanium (older model) is super. Very light and very accurate. I've read that they were actually built in the custom shop. Definitely way above the standard 700's.
Re: New Gun
Buy the 700. Put the extra money towards better optics. The sps stock sucks. Next year locate a used fiberglass stock of good quality. Bed your action. Go kill $#!+...
Or buy a 700 in laminate configuration and avoid the pos sps plastic stock altogether.
