Mullen's Timetable for a national championship at MSU

"Might take 15 years but we WILL win a National Championship at Mississippi State." Dan Mullen.... at the conclusion of his post-game press conference.

Well, at least he is optimistic. And it appears that he plans to coach at MSU for quite a while.

Question: Do you really think he was talking about football, or Jersey cows, milk offs, hay bale throwing, etc.?

With regard to my Rebels, I would just be happy to start with an overall SEC football title. Then worry about a national title. Not sure that I have 15 years to wait.

Hope he's right, even if it takes 15 years. Gonna take a helluva lot more than talk to make it happen though.

So, we fast forward to the year 2026 - and, still no National Championship for MSU. Upon being questioned by a reporter regarding that statement, Ole Humpy replies, "Well, I didn't say what sport it would be in...and I would like to offer my congratulations the the Lady Bulldog Volleyball team for a well-fought victory - they represented us very well."

That's pretty funny right there Po Monk. :D As we sit here today, Ole Miss has zero SEC losses in 2011...State has two. Anything is possible. Of course, Ole Miss has not won the SEC since the introduction of the black athlete to the SEC roughly 50 years ago, so...how old are you again? :D

Well it seems both teams are on a "plan" to reach for their lofty goals since this was discussed

As a Mississippi State graduate, I would be equally happy with athletic, agricultural, or timber championships. You gotta play to your own strengths.

Well, I've been scared to say much yet, out of fear of jinxing the most successful, simultaneous dual run of football success by the Rebs and Dogs in my football watching lifetime. While there are 6 games left, and anything can happen, I have really enjoyed this season so far no matter what happens from here on out. It has been an incredible run for both teams, with a lot of fun back and forth jawing at each other, while remaining mostly respectful to our opponents (haven't seen a lot of overt bragging or general tard behavior ---- notice I said I haven't seen a "lot" --- there will always be some, even during crappy years --- some just can't help themselves).

While I will remain hopeful for the elusive national championship to be won by my Rebs, as my original post in this old thread indicated, I would be elated with winning an outright SEC title, whether that means being in the mix for the national title hunt or not. I just want to see my Rebs win in a Sugar Bowl in New Orleans at least once before I pass into the happy hunting grounds. That is all I am asking, dear Lord --- just once. I'm not greedy. And after hanging in there with my Rebs through the drought of the 70s and 80s, through the occasional good times and too many bad, I think I have paid the price for and deserve that one moment of vicarious fan glory.

Looking at the national rankings and seeing MSU No. 1 and Ole Miss No. 3 still seems a bit surreal. But, with every week, and every win, often by convincing margins, these Rebs and Dogs are making believers out of this old skeptic. Is it safe to even whisper about the prospects of a magical Egg Bowl showdown for the SEC West title, and perhaps even much more? SSShhhhhhhhush.

Cool to look back. Enjoy your run boys. Just remember, they provide THE trophy in January...not October. Best of luck to the Dawgs and Rebs.

Y'all better stop acting like Mississippi State don't already have 3 national championships in disc golf. :D

I will say this, 'if', State and Ole Miss could pull some back to back titles national championships like Bama and Au did......that would be quite a feat, having two neighboring states with dual in state championships........

I too have been in awe of what both teams have done so far, and yes I realize it is the halfway point of the season. I find myself making "excuses" as to why the Dogs and Rebs may be having the success they are having. The stat I have heard from several media outlets and again on Head-to-Head radio yesterday that does reassure me the most is that the SEC West (all teams) have yet to lose a game outside of their own division. I believe UM and MSU has grown up in a tough environment. I think parity has come. And too I do believe that sometimes the work ethics of 2* and 3* players make them 4* and 5* players over the course of time. One thing you see for sure on both MS teams is the strength and conditioning of those players is phenomenal. They understand the results of hard work and are putting alot into that. Facility upgrades may be part of that as well.

Matter of fact, I'd consider them 4+* and 5+* players because they're upperclassmen, keep their head in check when getting praise for the most part, and are used to working hard. It's not uncommon that a 5* out of high school is a diva. That is detrimental to a team not to mention the time it takes to get their head out of the clouds.

That being said, I'd love to start picking up every 4* and 5* recruit in the southeast. I'm just saying this has peaked for both MS teams this year with mature talent.

I'm just waiting on the skeletons in the closet. Every program has them, and the more successful you become the more attention you garner and the harder it becomes to keep everything hidden. I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist. When 2 perennial also-rans jump to the top of the leader board there's going to be questions.
