Want to know the GOOD, the BAD, & the UGLY about Charles Daly semi-auto shotguns.

Has anyone bought this model Charles Daly Field Hunter VR-MC Youth 20 ga semi-auto.

Not a semi-auto fan but my son is about to worry the "P" out of me about getting him one. He ran across a little $$$.$$ and its burning a HOLE in his pocket. Will have to help out the $$$.$$ but do not want to buy a junky gun that will stay at the gunsmith & then try to pawn the thing off to some poor soul.

Daly used to make some good guns, but not these days. They are pretty much pieces of crap, hanging up, jamming, whatever you can think of..........it does it. If you are looking for a good youth 20 auto........the standard Beretta 390 sold that wally world is the gun to get. It has length adjusters and spacers in the stock so it can be used by a youth or a grown up.

Will the 390 shoot 2 3/4" & 3"? Went to berettausa.com and it did not specify both only 3".

Daly is not, and has never been, a manufacturer. They are an importer. They take something someone else makes to spec, and rebrand it. The Daly double guns made in Prussia in the middle of this century were outstanding guns. The current stuff, made in Turkey, you should stay away from. Run at search on any of the big gun boards, it could get brutal.

I would advise you to take GH22's advice (That is a first!) and get a Wal Mart Beretta 3901. You will not be sorry. The Russian Biakal is a pretty decent inexpensive auto, but good luck getting someone to work on it if it goes south. If the Wal Mart Beretta is too steep for a "kids gun," I would look hard at a used Beretta 390/391, Browning A5 or late model Gold, Super X2 or Remington 1100.

I have two friends that bought the 12GA. They have had them worked on twice for not ejecting the shell case. The spring was not strong enough to complete the cycle. The new mossberg 935 auto from what I have read about is going to be a good buy!

I knew you guys would give me the ugly and thats what I wanted to know.

My son got a 870 two years ago but thinks he needs a semi-auto. Its hard to say "NO" when he does good in school & not on the teachers / principles badboy list. Thats why he got a new 870 two years ago. Was trying to get by cheap but it looks like I'm not this time.

You also may want to look at the 1100 youth model. Proven gun that will shoot 2 3/4" or 3". Last time I looked (few months ago) they were in the mid $400 range.

I've got the 3.5 Multi Mag 12 Ga..C. Daly....no problems at all..EXECEPT it was camo'd in Realtree vice Mossy Oak....ugghh...It s shoot well and no problems from me....

my story

first I had a 12 ga browning gold... it was a lemon if there was ever a lemon.. i got so disgusted with that peice that I ended up giving it to Iron grip. he in turn went to a gun show last spring and proceeded to trade my browning for a 12 ga chales d pump....

I had probelms with that gun this year... specifically, the gun wouldn't fire... almost like the firing pin wasn't striking whatever it strikes...

i called charles d and spoke with a customer rep. he was to send me a new pin . . i never received anything from those guys...

gun was made in turkey. i think it best to find another gun


oh yea tell your son that theres nothing wrong with the 870. i would guess that more ducks have been killed with the 870 than you can beleive.
its a fine gun that for the most part can take the dirt, grit and grime that comes with chasing those often irritating dux....
