Bald Eagles (question for the experts) !

Postby RIP EM » Thu Jan 22, 2004 9:46 am

I have 4 Bald Eagles that hang around one of my favorite duck holes !

3 of these birds,... the resting ducks pay absolulely no attention to !

The 4th, and by far, the largest eagle.... when he patrols this break,... Every duck on the lake (very large break ) goes completly berzerk !

I have seen this happen on 3 or 4 occasions !

Ya'll know what my question is !

Is this big, bad boy eating duck for dinner ?

I know there is nothing I can do about it if he is ! Just wondering if any of you have ever seen, or even heard of this before ?

Just curious

When we hunt in the Atchfalaya Basin, there are bald eagles everywhere. They definitely eat ducks. I have seen the same thing you are talking about, an eagle flying over and the ducks go crazy. Have heard stories of them taking dead ducks that were shot off the water. Pretty amazing site to see the bald eagle flying over the marsh.

At the Yazoo Wildlife Refuge Office in the delta, they have a mount of an eagle sitting on a brach holding a green-wing teal in his talons. Pretty cool mount.

Most all birds of prey would love to dine on a duck I imagine. Peranogan Falcons (fastest bird on the planet) can bring down a mallard(used to see a commercial as such) 8) Have a nice day!

bald eagle

Postby champcaller » Thu Jan 22, 2004 11:18 am

I have heard they do do that. But once I was walking on a levee by an old sleugh and jumped about four wood ducks and right when they got up a hawk in a nearby tree swooped down and grabbed one. I was shocked! Though at the same time, really cool. 8)

I don't know about eagles, but we killed a goose a few weeks back and laid him on the levee about 30 yards down from us. We looked down there about 20 minutes later and a hawk was wearing him out.

Bald Eagle

I've had a bald eagle attack and take off with a foam turkey decoy. He went about three hundred yards before he realized something wasn't right and dropped it. If they would try and eat a turkey, I wouldn't put it past them to eat duck.

I've seen eagles herd coots into a nice tight group, then swoop in for the easy pickins.

the eagles around Reelfoot lake love duck season. they are notorious for picking up ducks before you can retrieve them... a pair of hunters were arrested last year for killing an eagle.....they are still in jail.......

Guess them boys @ Reelfoot NEVER went over their bag limit..If so, they'd just call in an Eagle to "fix" their dilemma...
I may go to Heaven, or I may go to hell....But one thing is for certain..It'll be after Duck season!!
