New Shotgun
New Shotgun
Got a mossberg 935 nwtf edition from my cousin for ducks this season. I got two chokes a extended ported waterfowl IC and a Modified tube that came with it. Does anyone hunt with a 935 if so what works good for you out of this gun in terms of shell and choke combination. I realize it depends on the situation but im not a great shot and would be doing alot of pass shooting.

No two guns are going to shoot the same 2 shells the same.
Get several brands / sizes of shells and go out and pattern the gun to see what is going to work best for you.

Re: New Shotgun
First...clean it...GOOD. Easy on tha lube. Second...pattern test that sucka...you HAVE TO KNOW where your shot it goin'. Third...shoot it like ya stole it. I like cheapo Winchester 3.5"#3's outta my Nova's factory Modified Choke. I dont care for a jam o matic for waterfowl myself,KEEP IT CLEAN, have fun and be carefull out there

Re: New Shotgun
Sorry for the thread hijack, but what's the most cost effecive way to pattern a shotgun. I've shot a couple different loads out of my 870 over the past couple of years, but I'm such a bad shot I can't tell what works best. I don't care to break the bank by buying 20 different boxes of shells. It could get expensive buying several shot sizes, in several brands and doubling that in 3 & 31/2 (although I've about decided the pains not worth shooting 3 1/2 inch). What brands and shot size would some of you experts suggest. I do a little long range shooting, but mainly pass shooting on public land using a modified choke. Additionally, should I shoot every choke at different ranges with different shells? Maybe I'm overcomplicating this process, but if I spend the time and money I'd prefer to do it right.
Re: New Shotgun
I added a limbsaver recoil pad for the kick but I am 24 yrs old 6'4'' 280lbs so it doesnt bother me very much. I bought the mossberg factory waterfowl choke that you can see in the barrel, I figured that they would have that choke specially patterned for that gun... Am I wrong? Is there a better choke out there for this gun?

Go to all your buddies hunting closets, grab 2 or three of every type shell they have.
Or, just pattern each box as you buy them. If they suck, shoot the box out, and try something else. Keep trying till you find a pattern that works for you.

When you gettem as close as I do, I dont matter what you shoot.

Re: New Shotgun
Patterning a shotgun will help. But of the time it is shooter error.. First you need to try a few things..
Find out which is your dominate eye. With both eyes open point at something and then close one eye at a time. Your finger will either move or stay on the spot you pointed at. The eye that keeps your finger in the same spot is your dominate eye. Most of the time is the same as your dominate hand. If not you will have some work to do to figure out how to shoot straight.
Next decide if you are a spot up (instinctive) shooter or a follow thru shooter.. Spot up shooters don't really aim they throw the gun up and pull the trigger.. Follow thru shooters take a little more time to get the shoot off, acutually see th bird and point the barrel at or in front of the bird.
Next make sure your gun comes up to your shoulder in the correct spot. When you shoulder your gun your cheek should be on the stock of the gun and your eye should be even with the rib of the barrel. In other words you should not be looking down on the rib. If you have 2 beads on your gun, you should only see 1 when you sholder the gun.. In other words there rear bead should be covering up the front bead. If you can see 2 beads your cheek is sitting to high on the stock.. This should be a natural position, but if its not practice getting the gun up to your shoulder in the correct position several times before you shoot, to try and "get your body used" to that position.

Re: New Shotgun
Bring it to the shoot next week at Turcotte and try it out. Seriously, if you are coming, let me know and I'll get a few people to bring you a shell or two of what they hunt with so you can pattern it.

Most shotguns wont shoot dead red straight. Shoot ya some paper, cardboard whatever at say 30ish yards, than again at say 50ish yards with the same choke and load (no pun inteded) take heed to the thickest area of shot holes...that 2 shots will show your guns and or your tendancy to shoot...you may be in for a REAL eye opener. Get with Squealer and Im sure he'll get ya onto a good hunting load...(there again....no pun intended)...Squealer...we get some dux and we'll do it again this year...Man, Im just full of em today...holla

Re: New Shotgun
My opinion is this, I am not a wealthy man. I would not be able to afford expensive shells anyway so I did not try patterning my gun with high end shells. I shoot what ever I can find at a good price, usually Estate, Fiochi, Win. Expert HV, or the cheaper Federals. Now you must realize in some cheaper shells they don't buffer the shot as well, I have shot at 50 yards, and be peppered then a 2x2" area be busted clean out. Anyway my point is if you must buy shells to try try what you would be most likely to shoot while hunting, don't buy Hevi-shot and pattern your gun when you know you will be hunting with X-perts. Thats all I got. Good luck.
Damn, i thought I had that one
