I think that it would be helpful for all of us, whether we hunt public or private lands to let the next generation, the newbies, and those less fortunate to here the rules that guide us as sportsmen, above what the letter of the law states!!!

I Hope The Waterfowler will put his $.02 in

here are a few of mine
1.) Sportsmanship above all else
2.) Never hunt a buddies hole without him
3.) Never skybust, if you think its outta range, it is!!!!
4.) Arguments on Public Land are won by shuttin up, not who can cuss the loudest
5.) If some one is already in the hole you wanna hunt, go to another, don't set on top of him
6.) Don't try to call another mans birds if he has them working
7.) Take a kid hunting whenever possible


Yall post some more, there are penty that i left out

-If ever invited on a hunt with others, try to keep your opinions to yourself and don't try to run the show being that you are a guest. Thank everyone that was part of the hunt that took you by shaking a man's hand, even if the hunt was good or bad.
-Show a little class and respect for those that are around you by the way you talk and carry yourself if some are newbies on a hunt with you.

this post is for serious unspoken rules for the waterfowlers in this forum, not the rules for a wild night

If invited on a hunt offer to split expenses, especially if boats, launch, etc are used.

Always have cold beer available for after the hunt is over

Always use running lights when running your boat in the dark, even if you know you are the only one you never really know this.

A Q beam is great, but if you can avoid using it avoid it. It actually makes things harder to see than easier, and once you turn it on it takes at least a minute to get your eyes re adjusted to the dark.

Location: Walker county Alabama It never fails that are some posts made by newcomers every year wanting to go hunting with someone. Personally, I don’t mind taking new guys if given the opportunity. I like to pass on my excitement about the sport. I took my friend Phillip on his first trip during early goose season year before last and had him in a field with about 150 geese piling in on him. The poor boy hasn’t been the same since. I also took my good friend Delmer on his fist duck hunt and he killed a federally banded mallard that morning. Sorry sucker has since shot another band out from under me and killed a 132 inch 8 point behind my house, but I still love him like a brother anyhow. Another friend, Daniel, was initiated last year on a wood duck hunt and now he’s obsessed. I said all that to say with all the new duck hunters out there, I thought it would be helpful to mention a few things they can go by to make the new experience more enjoyable to themselves and their mentors, thus getting themselves invited to go on even more hunts. I will list a couple rules I can think of and some of you other veterans can list rules you like. They can be serious or not, your choice.

If someone takes you to a good spot, don’t go around talking about it or broadcasting it’s location. Good spots turn into bad spots when they get shot out by everyone out there.

Do not take others to spots you have been taken without talking to the person who took you there. Don’t go in by yourself and blast everything that flies every day either.

Do not correct your mentor’s dog. If she needs a good tongue lashing, I’ll give it to her myself.

Do not complain about your mentor’s dog. She’s the one swimming the freezing water for your duck. You could be retrieving your own.

Be courteous. Thank your mentor for taking you even if there’s no ducks flying.

Offer to help any way you can. Offer to help buy the gas. Usually I won’t take gas money myself but it’s nice to be offered.

Don’t try to help call ducks right off the bat. If it’s your first hunt, chances are you’re not doing it right.

Do what you’re asked. Take advice. Don’t look at all advice as criticism. We want to help you do better. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t have taken you to begin with.

Wait for your mentor to call the shot.

Don’t get upset when your mentor jokes around with you or pulls a prank, it’s gonna happen.

OK guys, this is a start. Add all you want.

if you arent calling or calling the shot, then dont look up; the ducks are up there!

dont call unless asked to.

dont get your feelings hurt if asked to stop calling.

if someone else toted the decoys in then you tote them out.

Don't leave your limit with your host unless he requests them. If he has a good place, he gets plenty of ducks on his own.

If you are invited to hunt someone else's place, don't presume that your retriever is also invited. Ask, and if your host declines, don't get hurt feelings about it.

You'd think number 1 would cover 2-6 (and most of the rest that have been mentioned)....

Also: Don't ever talk bad about a man's dog. I have hunted with folks who I will not share a blind with again because of their dogs, but I would never mention it to them or others unless they asked.
