Concrete question

Im getting ready to build a pump house around a well that I just had put in, and was wondering how much concrete it would take to put down a 6'x6' slab to put the house on. A friend of mine said it would take less than a yard and that a yard is 9'x9'x4". The second question is could I do this myself with some bags of concrete/quickcrete, and how many bags would it take?

I use the following link as a "guide" when buying bags of quickcrete for small jobs. It's usually pretty close to what is needed.
http://www.quikrete.com/Calculator/Main.aspThis is a good one for just wanting to know volume needed:
http://www.concrete.com/calculatorsmaterials.htm#volumeHope this helps.

6x6x.333 (4 inches thick) = 12 / 27 = .444 x 1.15 (waste) = .5 cubic yds
Depending on where it is I would call a concrete plant and see if they would deliver a yard for you. Cost is around $90 per yard right now and that is well worth not having to mix all that quickcrete by hand. If you are doing this anywhere near the Jackson area pm me and I can help you get the concrete.

Thanks for the help. How does that math work?

he,s adding 15% waste, which would be slightly over a half a yard,
4" = .333 of a foot
so its length (6') x width (6')x height (.333') = 12 cubic feet / divided by 27 cubic feet( which is one cubic yard)= .444 of a yard of concrete + 15% = .5106 cubic yards of concrete needed.

i'd rather buy the whole yard than mix all that concrete in a wheel barrow

It CAN be done. My parents had an outdoor swing frame and we moved the swing and used the framing for an outside kennel. It's 8' x 8' and I bought bags and mixed in a wheel barrow myself. You can rent the small portable mixers and that would be the ticket though. If you buy already mixed, you will be looking at a minimum or have to pay for delivery.

Most companies will ask for a minimum. That is why I asked where you will be pouring because if it is in the Jackson area I may be able to get you 1 yard for the price of 1 yard. Let me know if I can help.
