What Distance?

Postby cwink » Tue Oct 23, 2007 8:50 am

Ok on the same line with What Rifle and What Caliber.. What distance are you comfortable with and with which gun/bullet combo.. I am a big ballistic buff so if you don't know your ballistics let me know, and I'll post them for you.. (It is a pretty slow day at work anyway)

22-250 55 Grain SP - Out to about 200 Yards - I like neck shots with this gun and 300 yards is really starting to push a neck shot.

243 - 85 Grain BTHP - Out to 300 Yards - If I am an inch high at 100 yards I am only 5.5 inches low at 300 yards. But I sight in for about 2-3 inches high at 100 yards.

7mm-08 - 120 Grain HP - This is a new gun and still trying to find the right bullet for it.. Right now I am Pretty iffy out to 300 with a +1.9 inches high at a hundred and drops to -7.6 at 300. Thinking about switching to the 139 Grain Light Mag round that is +1.3 at a hundred and -6.5 at 300.

444 Marlin - Another new gun.. I am not going to push it yet so 200 is about as far as I will take it. With the Hornady Leverlution bullet.

I shoot 130 grain 270. I must admit I do not know the ballistics of it. I sight it in 1in high at 100 yrds. I have never tried to make a shoot out to 300 with it. Everything I have ever shot has been 220 or closer.

Depending on the bullet type it goes from the best which is a Hornady Light Mag at +1.2 at 100yds to - 5.8 at 300yds and worst to a Soft point at +1.8 to - 8.0.

wow didn't realize almost a 7 in drop at 300. I like my 270 but I have been thinking about getting another rifle for hunting some more open areas. What has the least drop out to 300?

About the best there is going to be +1 to - 5 in anything bigger than 22 Caliber. To get that you have to with either a 243 or up to a Magnum round like the WSM or the Remington Mag or Weatherby Mag.. The 270 is a pretty flat shooting round.

I've never studied ballistics I shoot a .270 150 grain Corelok. I sight it in dead on at 100, but have dropped deer with it at 450 plus placed crosshairs just below top of their back.

I went ahead and got the 80 gr core lokt bullets in the .243...I'm not sure of the ballistics, but that darn thing is FLAT shooting to 200 yds.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Best case on 150 goes from +1.6 to 6.9 at 300 and down to -19.4 at 400 and -38.3 at 500

Worst case on 150 goes from +2.3 to - 9.6 at 300 and down to -28.2 at 400 and - 57.8 at 500

All the 80 grains are about +1.3 and -6.5 for the 243.. Take a look at the 85 Grain BTHP at +1.1 and - 5.5 which is not that big of difference to you get to 400 yards where the 85 Grain is +3 over the 80 Grain and has a considerable more Knock down power than the 80 grain..

That little BTHP is a bad mamma jammer..

.270- I shoot 130 grain winchester ballistic silvertips. I got it shootin 1.5"
high at 100 yards and comfortable shootin up to bout 350 yards.

.243 WSSM-95 grain winchester ballistic silvertips. Shootin 1.5"high at 100.
Havent shot it enough to really see how it shoots at long
distances but got a buddy that shoots his accurately at 400.

270 130 at +1.5 at 100 is -6.4 at 300 and -18.9 at 400.

243 WSSM is pretty close to the 243 85 Grain BTHP at +1.1 and - 5.5 at 300

100 grain corelock in 6mm. Never shot it at anything further than 180. Since my father took it to Wyoming for his antelope hunt, it's now dead-on at 200. Might have to try some longer shots this year.
It's a bloody mary morning...
