Confederate Ancestors??

Postby crow » Wed Aug 22, 2001 10:21 am

I have a set of medical books that were carried through The War by one of my distant relatives. He was a surgeon with a calvary company (don't know his name or what company he was with). The books were found in a steamer trunk in the attic of an aunt's house when she died, along with three almost perfect rifles. The pages are really brittle now, but some of them still have faint, bloody fingerprints on them where he was referencing the book while operating. The ghosts can get real thick when I look at that!

Confederate Ancestors??

Postby ScottS » Wed Aug 22, 2001 12:04 pm

I have four who served with the CSA - Three officer's (all LT's)and a Sgt. One of my three great-great-great uncles (Lt. Robert Spencer), was killed at the Battle of Murfreesboro, aka Stones River, while serving with the 29th Miss Inf.

One of the others was my Great-Great Grandfather Roswell A. Mallory. He was a Lt. in the 15th Miss Inf (Co. K) and was captured at the Battle of Nashville in Dec 1865. The ironic thing is...he was captured on my birthday - December 15th. We have his photos, diaries and letters.

I have collected the muster rolls of all of my confederate veteran ancestors. They were pulled from the MS Dept of Archives & History.

I haven't ever taken the time to trace my lineage, but I live in Corinth. The original Shiloh Rd. runs through my neighbor's yard, and we have Confederate (I think) entrenchments running through our back yard.

I had one great great great grandfather wounded and captured at the fall of Richmond just days before the surrender of Lee and was a POW at Hart Island in New York until August,1865. Another great great great Grandfather never stopped fighting and was killed by redlegs near Newton, MS. I haven't surrendered either.

My relatives came to ms from South Carolina in the early 1800's. The patriarch of my branch of the tribe lived in the Port Gibson area. He was a cotton planter and slave holder. Survived the war but lost his fortune, land etc. I'd have to dig out the books to get all the details.
