mudbuddy hypersport

any of you guys running these engines out there? if so, please do me a favor and measure the distance from lower drive shaft tube "center" to approximately "center" of upper drive pulley or engine shaft "center". i tried one of these, different make, and it did not do so well on my boat. the belt housing appeared to be too long and caused a water spray even on plane. the housing was in the waters direct flow coming from underneath the boat. thanks again for you guys that respond. i would really like to get one of these asap.

What kind of Boat are you running? Many people go and buy these surface drive motors not realizing "THEY DO NOT RUN VERY GOOD ON JUST ANY HULL" or they don't run at all in some cases...

The Hyper is pretty sensitive to transom angles, and they do make a kit to try to fix that problem. If I had to guess it is either a War Eagle, Express, G3, or Triton, but could be any of the other makes.

Another thing to think about is the transom weight you are putting on your boat. We had two calls this weekend with guys busting their transoms up carring them down the road.

Let us know a little about the situation and maybe I can put you in touch with some one that can help.

thanks for the reply eli. my boat is a 15' X 44" LakeSport .100 gage all welded mod-V. the transom height appears to be 17" and i thought it carried the weight very well. i could have still used the motor, but being an engineer by trade, my first impression lead me to believe the belt housing is too long alowing it to "drag" the water rushing from underneath the boat; we're talking on plane here. however, most people running these mud motors have much wider and longer boats allowing a much better hull attitude in the water. my intentions are not to brand bash, compare, or down play anyones product. so please understand my decision not to disclose the manufacturer of the mud motor i tested. hopefully withholding this information will prevent someone else from highjacking the thread and downplaying someone else's or voice their personal opinions. many hours or research, design, and sweat go into these engines so they all deserve credit. if you or anyone else can tell me that measured distance, it will help me qualify my first impression that the belt housing is too long. if it falls right in with mudbuddy, then i need to accept my hull is not going to work with a surface drive and fall back to my long tail. thank you in advance.

Are you sure you didn't have the long transom model on your short transom boat? Only the prop should be in the water, not the belt housing.

jim, i really can't answer that question till monday or tuesday unless ducman can provide me a measurement cause i don't know myself. you probabaly hit the nail on the head though. the models for tall transoms should be 3-5" longer so this could explain why the belt housing appeared to be too long.


:here is my latest research on a completely different style of mud motor:

i contacted KP Provost about his newly released 36 HP. (Remember we are now talking about a completely different type and design now) he stated, " on a boat this short and narrow that even his type of mud motor would be questionable. the smaller 25 or 27 HP models offered were probabaly too heavy as well."

guys i overlooked the most important measurement. it is not the crank center to drive center, it is the drive tube center to top of transom. sorry. thanks in advance for your help.

apparently the model i tested was for a tall transom. he gave me a measurement 3.5" longer than the one you gave me ducman. thanks for the reply. i guess now knowing this, i'll reschedule another test. please don't hesitate asking if i can somehow or someday help you guys out. happy hunting and keep them falling. :wink:

If I was spending my money.........I'd get a slightly bigger boat.... like a 16/48 which can commonly be found and at least a 27hp Pro-Drive.

I had a 15/42 with a 23 Hyper for a while and it was a POS combo compared to the Pro Drive combo I've got now..... 16/48 with 25hp PD.

I was extremely unhappy with Mud Buddy. Broken Belts, Bent Out Drive, Broken Actuators, etc......

Nightmare. It's someone else's problem now.

my latest test with a short shaft model boat did not do so well either. i had to get someone else to go for the test ride with me. so as long as they sat in the front, it would jump up on plane just fine. otherwise, i would trim the unit all the way down and still could not get the boat nose to lay down with just me in the boat. now they want to sell me floatation pods for three reasons: 1. floatation to help carry the additional weight 2. add extra lenght to the boat so it will act as a 17' boat 3. extra lenght will also act as very large trim tabs pushing the nose down when the hull starts moving forward. however, i can't argue cause all three reasons are valid. my conscience is tell me to stop pouring money into this hull as it will never perform as it should and go out and buy something at least 17' X 50" with floatation pods. thanks for the earlier replies.

You don't need or want flotation pods on a 17X50 boat. Before you spend big money on a boat or motor, get with me and run my rig. Regardless of what brand you decide to buy, it will give you some good information to start with. We are not far apart and I wil meet you. Call me at 719-9292.
