Hardest Duck to Hunt/Shoot

Postby cwink » Thu Jan 12, 2006 11:32 am

Alright, we have had all kinds of polls on this site from Best Tasting Duck to Favorite Duck to hunt.

But which duck is the hardest to hunt (locate and/or get to decoy) and which is the hardest to shoot (actually hit).

The hardest to hit is one teal out of a flock of 20 or more... They will make you look silly...

I will agree that a skillet shot is the hardest shot to make, and a diving wood duck will make you a believer.

The hardest duck to decoy to me as of now is a gadwall, isn't anything for them to circle 20 times and leave. Now 6 yrs ago when these suckers appeared on the map and fell in the dekes on the first circle, they were the easiest.

Last Sunday morning we were hunting our Brake and some low flyin' Woodies were screaming through with a 25mph tailwind. Heck, I was doing nothing more than throwing some steel and hoping they would run into it.

I have been very good (lucky) on teal this season but the pintails have been very elusive mainly because I cannot get them to get within 50 yards of the dekes. My other choice would be the moring woody coming through the cypress trees.

Hardest to Decoy....probably the Black duck. For some reason they just don't like to decoy that well unless mixed in with a group of mallards.

Hardest to hit....wood duck early in the morning flying low through the timber.

Easiest to hit...for me that's easy I have only missed 1 shot EVER at a Black duck...once they are in range they are dead...I really didn't miss the one shot I am claiming to have missed...only knocked a few wing feathers out and didn't drop him....the next shot I folded him like a napkin.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Hardest to decoy: Mottled ducks that live on the Gulf Coast all thier lives and know it like the back of thier webbed foot, and know there ain't been no buncha plastic looking ducks sitting in that hole before......

Hardest to Hit: A highly motivated teal getting out of the hole.
So many ducks, so little time....

Most frustating to call and decoy: Gadwall
Least predictable: Gadwall
Most likely to fly in the "butt first" orientation: Gadwall
Most likely to get shot at and comeback into range to be shot at again: Gadwall
Most likely to copulate with a spinning wing decoy: Gadwall
