Louisville football coach Charlie Strong is the favorite to become the next Tennessee head football coach, ESPN.com’s Chris Low reported Tuesday afternoon. Louisville will meet Florida on Jan. 2 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
According to the report which cites unnamed sources, Strong is the top candidate but nothing has been finalized. Louisville is expected to match the Tennessee offer to try to keep Strong.
During Strong’s Monday press conference, he wouldn’t answer questions about his coaching future. He simply said: “I will say that at the right time.’’
Strong is in his third season at Louisville and is 24-14. The Cardinals are 10-2 this season, won a share of the Big East title and the BCS bowl berth to the Sugar Bowl.
He came from Florida where he served as defensive coordinator for seven seasons, then was hired by Louisville in 2009, right before Florida’s 2010 Sugar Bowl game against Cincinnati.
Two other SEC jobs were filled Tuesday. According to reports, Arkansas will hire Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema and Auburn has tabbed Arkansas State Coach and former Tigers offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn to be its next coach.
Cincinnati Coach Brian Kelly exited for Notre Dame before the Sugar Bowl game against Florida in 2009.
