So are all the spots first come first serve or are some areas reserved?

first come first serve... while i was in school, it was nutt's first 2 season's. i sat out in that mfer with buddies starting at like 1 in the afternoon. that $#!+ got real old... i told my parents they can either start paying someone or find someone else to set up and take down. way to much work to even think about enjoying the tailgate when you spend all friday out there, then tailgate all day, then have to take it down and pack it out. we have since revamped our strategy and it's a million times more enjoyable...

Football is probably the last thing on their minds.

I belong to a large tailgate group. We pay a guy in Oxford money to set up 2 large tents, several tables and chairs for every home game. It usually winds up costing each family approx $125 to $150 per season. It is set up in the same spot for every game. It is our guy's job to get the spot, set up, and take down.
Thus, I can enjoy tailgating without having to fool with the set up or take down. When we tailgate for a game, we just bring with us a cooler (on rollers) with drinks (including beer, bloody mary mix for 11:00am games, mixers, bourbon and vodka), some food (most often something that I have either grilled or smoked the night before or the morning of, including fixins prepared by my wife), and a few things like tablecloth, napkins, plates, cups (red solo of course), plastic eating utensils, etc. Everyone else does the same, and we wind with plenty of food, and a lot of different foods to sample. We have some really good cooks in our group. At the end of the game, we go back to the Grove and either finish tailgating/realaxing or pack up to leave (depends on what time the game is over and whether we are still in the mood for fun).
For a really late game like the Texas game this coming weekend (kickoff after 8:00 pm), we will do something a little different. We will pack light. This means the cooler will be styrofoam/disposable. All food taken into the Grove will be in disposable containers. Anything we take into the Grove that is not eaten or consumed before gametime will either be given away or thrown away. After the game, we will not be heading back into the Grove. We will head straight to our vehicle. Since we don't have to worry about take down, this is an option. And it is great for these late games.
The cost per season, as indicated above, is very reasonable for having all this set up and taken down for us at every home game. My family does not tailgate every game, but when we do, it is ready. And since the cost is so reasonable, I don't worry about trying to tailgate every game just to get my money's worth. To make this as economical as our cost, you need a pretty large group. Its a lot of fun, and IMO, the only way to do it. I used to do all the set up and take down myself years ago, especially the years my son was at Ole Miss, and it nearly killed me. The work required was nearly taking the fun out of it. Then we got smart and joined this tailgate group. Should have done this a long time ago.

Im curious here, what makes the grove so much better than other college campuses?? I admit I have never been to the grove, but it does not seem to be any different than any other place I have seen people tailgating?? I mean you have tents set up, food, drinks, and socializing.. What am I missing that is so special about the grove?? Not my intentions to get anything started, I'm just curious why its so much better according to some of you Ole Miss fans.

steeped in deep rooted tradition...by comparison the junction is still in its infancy alongside the many decades of the grove (and the generations that have congregated there). can't speak for death valley, but hear it is also a great experience.

because its a place where everyone convenes at, most everywhere else, it is litterally tailgating where you pull up into a parking lot pull everything out and start right there in the hot asphault. Im sure every school has an area where maybe larger groups get together but doubtfully as big as the grove. Plus its been going on for a long time.
