Has anyone tried to make a gun stock? We cut down a black walnut tree that had been standing dead at least 20 years and I was amazed how nice the wood is. I'm trying to figure out how to get some of the stump out of the ground -- I understand thats where the best marbled wood is for stocks. Any advice on aging/drying the wood and making a stock. We had it milled into 2.5 inch thick boards and are making a table out of the biggest pieces.

Man if it is truly a unique piece of wood, I would not take a chance on doing it yourself. I'd send it to Boyd's or another stock maker and let them do it! Unless you practice making several of them on less quality woods, I wouldn't want to try learning on a unique piece of wood.

If you are just a tinkerer and want to do it yourself, get a few other blanks and practice on them first!
