Now let me start by saying I understand how it can screw you with a guy signing with another school at the last second. With that being said the comments from Les Miles comments about Gunner Keil were completely uncalled for. There is no reason why a college coach should make those comments.

I agree. It comes down to this: Miles is having a very tough time with the local fanbase. He was trying hard to win some people back.

I don't know about that. I can see why he did it. Look at it from his perspective...
1. Top QB in the country commits to you and says he will early enroll.
2. You have a 4 star OL that has also verbally committed that is a great player but wants to enroll early. You can't take both, so you do the honorable thing and let the OL out of his commitment to go to Auburn.
3. All the while the Kiel is saying he will enroll early at LSU, then witout even a phone call he doesn't show up and enrolls at ND, hence costing you two recruits both top notch.
I don't blame Miles. Yes I am an LSU fan, but these kids while they are kids need to learn that if you put your name on something you have to stand behind it. That IMO is the same issue with the housing bubble across the country, no one stands behind signing their name on the dotted line to pay for something. Somewhere people need to be held accountable, I think Kiel should have been, I say kudos to Les Miles.

disagree jeff. a grown man has no business making those remarks about a kid no matter the circumstances - period.

We will agree to disagree then.
He is a kid but at the same time he's 18. If he wanted to change his mind so be it, it's his decision. Have some inner strength to stand up and tell someone your decision, don't let them find out when you register at Notre Dame.

Everything I've read is the dad was running the show, and was very demanding on making Gunner the no 1 from day 1 and not even recruiting a qb next year. All speculation but either way he shafted Indiana, then lsu I say drama king in the waiting

Ok. Then Miles should say he cost the class some recruits --not insult the kid and his ability. If Kiel didn't have the "chest and ability to run a program," why did you want him so bad in the first place -- again, Miles not thinking thru his comments.
Some LSU fans and Miles look like spoiled brats to think that EVERY school doesn't have to deal with this kind of thing.

+1
Heard that he jacked around several schools, not just these two. From what I heard the dad was demanding that he be the only QB to be signed this year or next. Basically demanding that he be guaranteed a starting spot without having to compete for it. Who would want a kid that has that mentality? Especially with a loud mouthed parent to go with it.
It is what it is but if I were a coach I would say thanks, but no thanks. A kid who is not willing to compete for his job is not worth his salt and would be an infection to the team.

I believe that if you give a man your word, then you stick to it. I don't agree in talking bad about the young man, but he started off on the wrong foot far as im concerned. The way he done Indiana and then LSU is gonna stick with him for the rest of his his career.

It was probably in poor taste for Miles to comment one way or the other on Kiel. He screwed LSU, that is for sure. LSU wasted valuable time and money on the kid and lost a 4 star lineman to Auburn as a result of his decommitment that he didn't even have the balls to call the coaches and tell them about. Supposedly, the coaches found out about the decommitment through the media.
With that being said, what is worse, Miles calling out this kid or Saban telling another kid on National Signing Day that the no longer have a spot for him after he had been committed for 6 months? I have heard ESPN and every other sports channel running down Miles, and perhaps rightfully so (you guys know I am not, nor have I ever been a Les Miles fan), but hardly a word about Saban.
Football needs an early signing period just like basketball and baseball. They need to having a first signing day in early August and a secondary the first week in February. If you plan to early enroll, you must sign in the first signing period. Once you sign early, that is it..no take backs. That would stop a bunch of this mess. They also need to eliminate gray shirts. The coming hard rule on 25 recruits in a class will not matter if the abuse of the gray shirt system persists.

What about oversigning? How about the coach's word? You tell a kid he's got a spot, but sign more players than can be allowed in a class. I've got no problem with a kid doing the same thing to a coach who does exactly the same thing to kids. At least the coach is rolling in the $$$

That's funny. All I heard for 5 straight days was how evil Saban is(and should be noted that he offered him a grey shirt). I hardly heard anything about Miles and Kiel.
Guess we live under different rocks.

We must...given our preferences, perhaps we have selective hearing. I think we can both agree that recruiting is a dirty game and to be successful, you must be less than ethical at times. Miles and Saban are both guilty of this and anyone that thinks differently is either not very bright or willfully ignorant.
As to the offer of the grey shirt, if I was the kid's dad, thinking my kid has reached an agreement with a coach that he will play football in return for a free education and on the day the express written aspect of that meeting of the minds is to be executed, the coach tells us, oh yeah, you have to pay for school, I would probably punch him in the face. That is absolute chicken %&(*...Miles has done it and so has Saban. Both are wrong and clearly not true men of character IMHO.
If my son was a blue chip recruit in today's coaching market (particularly a QB), I would probably push him to go to South Carolina or Georgia. At least with Spurrier and Richt, you know what you are getting. You never know with Saban or Miles. Saban is the king of grey shirts and medical releases, while Miles is just not that bright and plays favorites to the detriment of the team (and has screwed over a few recruits in the past as well).

Yeah its a dirty business. But the kid was told that he would likely receive a grey shirt. Apparently his rehab wasnt going well. Some could say that holding off one semester, rehabing the knee, and then getting a full 4 years plus a likely redshirt would be more beneficial to him. He reneged on his Auburn pledge months ago, so I wonder why they didnt offer him again on signing day when they needed defensive linemen? The kid got a free ride at Arkansas, so I cant feel too bad for him.
Mike Slive really screwed the kid. Without the new SEC Only signing cap rule, the kid would be at Alabama. That rule served no purpose.
{Cue whining Aubrun fan}

You can spin it all you want...he still had a scholly offer until signing day when Bama had other commitments come in that made him expendable...pure and simple. That is someone's child that got screwed over. Saban treats his program like a business. I admire that in a way and who can argue with the results. However, in this case, if it were a business, he would be sued for breach of contract because there was a meeting of the minds. Just because the kid was prohibited from officially signing by the NCAA would be immaterial in court. You had an offer and an acceptance of that offer.
As I stated before, an early signing period would end a lot of this crap. Moreover, if there is not an early signing period put in place, there should at least be method to penalize coaches like Saban and Miles for unethical actions such as this IMO.
