You'd be surpirsed how many egg counters they have trained. Is it most, well, you might have me there. But it's a helluva lot more than any other organization.
Lobby powers? Please. DU won't take a stand. They won't take a stand on ANY hunting related topic (i.e. late duck season, dove hunting in ohio, our right to hunt our NWR's). They wouldn't take a stand in south dakota last year, when the usgs tried to slip a bill that would allow draining of any wetlands less than an acre (opening the door for neighboring states to do as well). Quick math says most important states, most important habitat ought to be at top of their list. No, they couldn't risk pissing the farmers off there. Got too much habitat 'conserved' there...yeah right. They hide behind their mission statement, as a habitat only organization. Would you give if they called themselves Habitat Unlimted, and didn't have drunken free for alls where you can pay too much for crap? There is a national wetlands conservatory out there, I don't even know the name excatly...Apprently they never made it as big as DU. They didn't have a scheme. Of course DU didn't historically, its simply a sign of the times.
DU TV (which has been such an embarassment to them that wish they had never started it) actually did a show, quail hunting on a DU project in the bahamas. Tried to justify it by saying a bluewing got blown off course one time and ended up there, or something else rediculous. Its a play ground for the rich, using your memberships dues. Its funny enough they screw people, then to show it on tv and want people to watch it and give more takes the cake. Ever got the feeling during that show your watching a tv evaligist? travis

First things first Bufflehead I'm right behind ya.
OK Goose first of all lets get back to the part where you said that DU "didn't want piss off the farmer's". You might not know this but most of us do. HECK NAW YOU DON'T WANT TO PISS OFF THE FARMERS . THEY MAKE EVERTHING IN THIS WHOLE DUCKHUNTING WORLD TIC.
Now to the pipes and "little levee work" I get all the pipes and levee work they will allow me . for conservation and for BANGIN GREENHEADS. As long as I keep seeing my money being spent like that I'll keep dishing it out.
AND THE LAST THING. OK guys I gonna lay this out as gently as possible. Understand me now I don't want to piss anyone off with this BUT its just my opinion.
The whole drinking thing a the DU suppers,
well its like this I love BEER and I like WHISKEY. I 've been going to these events for about 23 years now. Every time I have had a ball and there was never any trouble.
And nobody on here can say they don't like to see the HOOTER girls carrying around those pictures. With their little M.O. bikini top and that short skirts on. And Momma duck hell she makes the banquet every year.
Men I grew up going to these banquets like this I'm 28 years old now. I hope the next 28 banquets are just as good.
Most of the people who want these type banquets to end are the ones whose wives want let them go.
All I know is the NWTF and Quail Unlimited quit having these type of banquets around here and everybody quit going so now they don't have banquets. thats my point most people want say it but they like to have fun.
If my idea of a fun banquet don't suit some, then as suggested by others have a NO drinkin No hooter banquet. But its like they say on ROCK 103 "WE like AZZnTITTIES.
GIVE'UM HELL MOMMA DUCK you sexy thang you.

How can a national organzation that is supposed to be about wetland habitat NOT be opposed to law allowing wetlands to be drained? Read destroyed.... Yes farmers make it happen, and they are paid well for it. WRP, CRP, wetland easements, and rental from duck hunters. Farmers make a living off that land, and when you can get paid as much, or more, for not farming it, what would you do? Don't try to make it out folks doing right out of the kindess of their harts, they can't afford to do that. But then again, why drain thousands of acres to make more crops the gov will pay to let rot? How much common sense does it take to realize draining wetlands where ducks breed is bad?
Hell yeah they'll do a little dirt work or give you a culvert. You have 100 acres, they throw a nominal amount, and claim your 100 acres as 'saved'. Print it in the magazine so you sheep followers can say, hey, lookie at all the land they saved. Same reason if you know someone, they'll give you dirt work or culverts for non duck projects, they just want to click off more land 'saved'. How much land have they bought, or put in permanent easements? Very little. And most of that is private indiviuals who stepped up and donated it. Every one of those real nice signs you see as a DU project, has half a dozen other agencies listed with it (normally, the usgs, usfws, or corp of engineers). Wonder who got the land, who got the sign....Hell I know, and if you'd open your eyes you'd know too. Of the thousands of acres they have 'saved' this year, call them and ask them what percentage did they out and out buy, or put permanent easements on, without any other organization involved...They wont answer you, first off, they don't know, and secondly they don't want to know.
Giving to an organization cause you get a big banquet out of it, is no different than the farmers doing the right thing, becuase they get paid for it. That aint no hero brother.
BTW, I do not fault local du chapters for the work they have done. Their are lots of project nationwide that where done grassroots style, that have made major impacts in local areas. I do find value in that, much more so than someone buying wicker patio furniture with the du logo on. travis

Goose just to let you in on a little something. I work with DU alot and to qualify for pipes and levee work you have to leave 33% of your property in wetlands. meaning if there is no water before you start there will be 33% of the property in wetlands meaning there has to be 33% water or aquatic plants at all times. this is figured on an average yearly rainfall.
And as far as wrp or crp is concerned I have never met a farmer who didn't loose his ass. farmers don't put land in those programs landowners put it in the program to get some quick cash. the only farmers that put land in those programs is the ones that don't know any better thats probably why they aint farming anymore. or they couldn't work the land due to moisture problems or poor soil conditions. Meaning BROTHER it was too wet to farm or the soil sucks. and until you know the specifics on wrp and crp in the delta you look realy stupid talking about it.
but I will e-mail you all the guidelines if you want.
and as far as the goverment paying to let crops rot well they have been doing it for years now and the farmers are spoiled. and besides that some times it keeps the farmers and their families from starving. cause if they starve then this stuff realy don't matter. cause the ducks want have a thing to eat since that wrp and crp you like to talk about aint going to feed them either considering its going to take about 30 years for those trees to make acorns.
so had you rather a few pair of mallards not breed on the half acre pond that got drained because that farmer needed a little more land so the goverment could feed him a little more . Or the ducks not eat at all. cause the crops that rotted is the ones those ducks will be eating. buy the way down here its a little differant. land sells for about $900-2200 per acre and in south dakota or north dakota (you mentioned one of em)sells for about $200-500 per acre. and if you would read a DU magazine instead of just looking a the pictures you would know that when they mention the pothole region. thats where it is and yes they do buy land up there.(nesting land, thats what they mean by pothole projects)
when you see a DU sign on a spot of ground and all the other goverment agencies on that sign its cause they bid on the ground together.
I'am a loyal sponsor of DU and will always be. and no I don't have wicker furniture on my back porch the only thing I have with DU on it is my tag on my truck cause Scooter gave it to me. half these yahoos with DU stickers on their truck aint members they just got a $2 sticker.
Wingman yea I worry about ducks thats how I make my living. But I worry about them about 360 days a year cause I only go to about 5 banquets a year. So thats 5 days I get to think about a bottle of jack and a half-naked lady.

Who said anything about the delta? Open your eyes to a much larger picture. WRP & CRP programs are where the land is thats growing ducks. WRP in MS is simply a way of getting a gov funded duck hole, and by God if I could pull it off, Id do it too. Thats why there is 11,000 acres enrolled, and 14,000 more on backlog to get involved.Low prioity is given to areas where their is already suitable habitat, and where ground is expensive (meaning what you said, land in ppr region compared to here). I was thinking about where ducks are grown, not simply the tv5 viewing area.
Do you think ducks would starve if it weren't for culitavted crops? Ducks eat cultivated crops cause their natural foods in natural wetlands are gone. There are a dozen foods with more go than corn or rice, that God grew in natrual wetlands before we ever cultivated crops. And thats what people go back with when they make WRP projects, natural duck food. You think rice and beans and acorns are the only things ducks eat, cause thats all they have here. Look outside your backyard sometime, and see the ducks thick on WRP projects in other states.
You still didn't tell me how much 'habitat' has actually bought, or put permantent easements on. Oh I know, they did this, and that (I used to read their propganda too, before I saw through it), they had a thermomter graphic they used for 2 years showing 100,000 acres or whatever, but that doesn't answer my question. Their defintion of habitat provided and mine is different. I want to know how much ground they have actually bought, or put into permanent easements with the millions of dollars they have been sent. Not just a culvert for a field that would have been pumped with or without them, Im talking cash on the barrel head put your money where your mouth is saving that ground forever.
I don't begrudge your tieing one on a DU banquet. I only wonder why that's an incentive to give to a worthy cause, that you wouldn't deem worthy otherwise. travis

Whether you like it or not DU has rich/politically backed supporters and lead a powerful lobbying effort for WRP and CRP. I mean think about it...thats their bread and butter at present...makes sense, doesn't it.
Oh, and theres plenty of natural foods in the marshes down south....them ducks are just gettin lazy thats all.
