I've not been on the boards since Sunday and was going to log in last night @ 9:45 when my cell phone rang. It was Robert Stanton calling to tell me this news as he noticed I had not been on and thought that I was out on the river without internet service! I am home but have been real busy past two days. I am glad he called as I too had spoke to Mike a few times and we would PM each other in our "effort" to rile old Benny up! He did finnally made peace(somewhat) with his archnemissis Benny. Once you got to know the big guy, you could not help but like him. I too will miss his imput and his stories of how the South Delta used to be. Rest now Big Sporty, as you deserve some peace.

Prayers sent.

I'm very sorry to hear this. He will be missed. Prayers go out to his family. Maybe this will serve as a wake up call for some of us to take our health more seriously.

Sportsman 450, you will be missed. :(

Mike was my tennis coach starting at about 10 years old, and coached me until I was about 16. Thanks goodness I reunited with him as an adult, becuase all the memories that he had of me were of a spoiled teenager. He drove me and 5 other guys all over the south playing in different tennis tournaments every weekend for several years. He was paid, but not well. He knew that we had potential and I think out of that group 5 out of 6 of us were ranked top 10 in Miss and 2 went on to play college tennis. He did it because he truly cared, and certainly not because he wanted to hang out with a bunch of brats. He was a great coach, and pushed us all way beyond our potential. We reunited several years back and I fished with him on a couple of different occasions. Mallardchaser and I took him fishing a couple of times when his health started to decline and Mallardchaser took him many times besides that. Like everyone else I loved the stories of ducks pouring into the South Delta. As a hunter I love to see the spark in other hunters' eyes as they tell stories. I think it re-assures me that I am not crazy, but that what I see fascinates me just as much as it does other people. He will be missed in the tennis community, and in the hunting community greatly. Rest in peace big Mike...

What was Mike's last name? Please forgive me for asking. I did not know him except through the forum.

Just got off the phone with Sporty's brother, Garland Lyell. He said that he had been in Baptist Hospital for a kidney problem. He said that Sporty died of sleep apnea. I know that there was some discussion concerning apnea on here before. Don't take it litely.

GREAT POEM for anyone that has crossed over to the other side ....comes from a scene in the movie "Out Of Africa".

With rue my heart is laden ,
For golden friends I've had.
For many a rose lipped maiden,
And for many a light foot lad.

By brooks too broad for leaping,
The light foot boys are laid.
The rose lipped girls are sleeping,
In fields where roses fade.
