This place is not normally this wet. We don't want to flood this corn this early but sometimes #%$ happens. The water we are standing in in the pic has since been let go. I hunted it this am but that is prolly the last teal hunt on the property... until regular duck season of course.

i meant in general. How many acres do you plant and flood? Is it near some large body that traditionally holds birds? It is interesting to see ducks being taken outside of the "traditional" areas.

It is about 50 acres in the Flint River watershed... where the Flint empties into the TN river. I guess we flood about 15 or 20 acres. It is a traditional area for North Alabama waterfowl.

That area of nw bama is refered to as the lost flyway

The TN valley is kind of like a mini MS delta. The TN river travels east to west thru North Alabama and actually flows north a good way to empty into the Ohio and on to the MS river. Maybe its east/west flow is the reason it attacts birds from MS and Atlantic flyway? Obviously it does not hold the # of birds that the MS delta does but it certainly has enough to make waterfowl hunting worth the effort. It is kind of stuck between the MS and Atlantic flyway geographically as well. I have killed banded birds from traditional MS flyway and Atlantic flyway nesting grounds from the same blind. Black ducks are not uncommon. The main watersheds are the TN river, Elk river, Flint river and the Paint Rock river. TVA created lakes throughout the valley and all along the TN river back in the 1930’s. The lakes are full of hydrilla/milfoil and attract good numbers of gadwall, baldpate and all the divers. Lakes also attract a great number of raw-booty idiots that think they can kill a duck at 100+ yards.


Never heard of it being called the 'lost flyway' but that is a very good description of it.

Never heard it called that either. I grew up in Tishomingo county, just south of where the river makes its bend north. A good friend of mine and I have often talked about and wondered how much influence the TN river has on the ducks that find their way to NE MS area, esp. those potentially from the Atlantic flyway (i.e. black ducks).

The area Tica is in, is more Northeast Alabama than Northwest, the further you go west past the Decatur area it gets tougher in general. And all North Alabama lakes are full of crazy Georgians, Tennesseeans and South Carolinians. All the crazy Albanians are in the Delta or Arkansas.

My last teal hunt (Friday morning). Nice morning, tons of birds in the air.
