Tim you can catch sockeye(red) salmon in august just not as hot as earlier in the summer. In august you will be on the 2nd run which is usually a little slower. The pink salmon run every other year and the silvers usually come in late august. Also some great trout fishing i caught rainbows up to 30 inches and saw bigger ones caught. There was a place in coopers landing that rented fishing poles cant remember name,for reds all you need is a sockeye fly because you are basically just snagging them. So all you would have to do is rent a pole buy a few flys,then pay to take the russian river across the river. This would be your best bet for a short fishing trip for salmon. You can check for quides in coopers landing only one I remember off top of my head is trout fitters. That is definetly the area you want to fish for salmon or trout.
