Ddub... please read the title of your post what is the fasted new outboard. I answered your question. I didn't take time to read your post as the question was pretty plainly stated in your title. I would never ask what is the fastest outboard when speaking about a 25-40 hp motor. Plain and simple it's not even close.

In further discussion if you truly want a fast motor have your boat re rated as a commercial vessel fairly straightforward process and doesn't take much of your time. Then you determine the proper HP rating. I call BS on a max hp rating of 40hp on an 1848 that is WAY underpowered and I would think it's almost unsafe to put a 25 hp motor on a boat that size. I would check with the manufacturer I think you have some bad info.

Jeff I agree with you, he did say "fastest new outboard"! But talking about the rating plate. Unless something has changed recently, all manufacturers put a max of 40 hp on any tiller operated boat. By BIA standards you are suppose to have remote steering to get a rating above 40 hp. Same with stick sticking. They will not rate a "stick steer" boat above 40hp regardless the size.

If thats the case then what is the point in 90 and 115 stick steer motors?

I have had this conversation with 549 before. I think he is saying that the manuf. will not rig a boat with a higher HP than 40 with tiller or stick. You the consumer can do as you please. But may open yourself up to additional liability.

I figured the Lunds and other boats I've seen running around with 115hp tillers must have had a commercial rating to still be legal.

It has nothing to do with legality. It's all about covering their butts on Liability. You as the consumer can put any size motor on any size boat if you wish. The boat will not be illegal. But should you have an accident, you've opened yourself up to possibly a serious liability claim simply because the BIA and or Coastguard said it was above their safe recommendations. No legitimate tournament organization that Im aware of will allow over rated boats for this reason. Most insurance companies won't knowingly insure boats that are over rated either. Why because of Liability exposure. The same reason a dealer won't put a motor on bigger than recommended. If you were to have an accident then he becomes part of that liability. Commercially rated boats fall under a different category. They are not even required to have flotation in em. You can purchase and do what you please with em including getting insurance to a point. At one point and time you had to show proof of being a commercial fisherman or in some kind of commercial business requiring the use of the bigger motors but that went away long ago.

There's a reason the mercurys are cheaper.... The Nissan my buddy has has been a good motor

Huh? I have a 754 War Eagle with a 50hp rating on the plate? Fully skinned out, floor etc.. NOT built with a console etc.. The same exact boat with a console is rated for a 90.

I have a 1652 G3 with a 40 Yamaha. In my opinion It will flat out fly.

Don't doubt that one bit. There were a bunch of 754's got out like that. But they were all skinned and floored, have extra flotation in them and are heavier. All those different things factor into the recommendation. Actually the Screaming Eagle version of the 754 was rated for 115 hp. But as a rule most tiller operated boats when leaving the factory are just open floored jon boats and thereby get the standard 40hp rating plate. But again this is ONLY A RECOMENDATION! There is no law that says a bigger motor can't be used. If the manufacturer feels comfortable with his rating he can certainly use it as long as it's within the formula. Length x width x depth divided by a certain factor determine what a hull can be rated up to. Now if anything less than that rating is applied to a boat it's because the manufacturer feels that for one reason or another (lack of this or that) it wouldn't be safe with that much hp in some FOOLS hands! Like I said its all about Liability!
