big N O! too focused on safety and surroundings to let "donia" out to play! ...wife was on edge since it was the first trip by ourselves in an unfamiliar city that big. we stayed at marriott marquee on time square...so we were in a giant wad of strangers a majority of the time there.

going in with another couple or group of friends, on the other hand, "donia" may have more opportunity to surface.

I went to NY last month and I believe that to see ground zero you have to be drawn to get a tour. I didn't try to go but a local there told me you have to enter your name online to be drawn to get to go see it. It is covered by fences and to see the fountain you need to get a pass online and it isn something you can just walk up and look at.

It is recommended that you sign up for a tour online and print your ticket ahead of time but you can go by their "ticket office" and print out a ticket, but you do not have to be drawn to get a tour. The security getting into the memorial was worse than at a airport. Once you get in there is a NYPD officer every 25 ft it seems.
