Wild melon

Postby Wingman » Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:18 pm

Short of nukes, how do you kill this stuff? I tried 1.5 pints of 2,4-D in late June while it was small but most of it was unphased. I resorted to bush hogging sections of it today to try and let some grasses get another start.

May try a dicamba product like Clarity? I'll see what I can find on it's control. Are you talking about Cucumis melo? What are you trying to avoid killing where it is?

I don't know the correct name but it puts out little miniature water melon type fruit that turn yellow when ripe. I want to keep my grasses but control this stuff.

I googled cucumis melo and that's it. I have a 12 acre pond that is infested with it and it has been in catfish production for about 25 years until last year.

Ignite (glufosinate) will smoke most of the grasses. It's a nonselective.

Blessing in disguise it looks like. I flooded it all while it was still green and this has been the hole used most by the birds this season. I'm wondering if all those leaves and vines are attracting the invertebrates?

that will fix it! Place a stake in the middle and tie him up to it and have enough room to move around to get it all

Gramoxone will smoke anything it hits and it's cheaper than ignite. Mix up a heavy load and go to town on it. The active ingredient paraquat(sp?) is some bad stuff. Don't get it on you and rinse your spray equipment after use. It will also drift under hot windy conditions. If that doesn't work get a goat.

Yeah, I've sprayed thousands of acres of gramoxone in my time. I'm looking for a selective herbicide so I don't kill the grasses. Even so, gramoxone kills off the top. I want to go to the root.

I don't know what eats them. The pond I'm talkin about is right across the canal from y'all.
