Josh, he did when he was a wannabe field trialer... he found out that wasnt his schtick, and got on something that was, and 20 years later wrote another book... his new book ought to be in the fiction catergory... Amazing the same dude wrote both books.

I agree... find a local hunting reteriver club, and meet some dog people personally, and see what they got going on. Once you understand the end result, you can better understand the means. travis

I tried to get involved with the local retriever club in the last year, and let's just say they were anything but cordial to the idea of me coming in with them. The next ones closest are about 200 miles away. So that doesn't help matters at all.

As for the geese. I live out on the plains, and you can't even see the mountains from here. But we do get some snow geese around this part of the country. We haven't had as many in recent years because the drought has totally changed to water make up and the crops in this area. Not many grain crops get planted anymore, and so in turn not as many geese and ducks to hunt.

You are correct in thinking I don't have an e-collar. But I am starting to think I need one. I used my Father in-law's when doing some training with my yellow lab, and he responsed really well to it. I have found a good article off a kennel website that gives step by step methods for training FF. So I will try that and see how we come out with it.

And for the record I think the black dogs make the better dogs all in all as well, but not by much.

Never use a collar part time. Big No No!!! Now it might be OK to leave your transmitter in the truck provided you have a yellow or brown dog, hehehe. Those black ones know if you have it in your pocket or out, hehehe.

Seriously, your a ways away from getting a collar. Their not magic and in the wrong hands do more harm than good. Now I like collars, but just trust me you need to watch somebody introduce a dog to it, train with it, read a lot about it, etc.

Get that Milner book, the first one with an old man sitting on a stump or boat petting a puppy. Just follow the daily FF routine he explains it good and look at the pictures. We'll help you through it.

You can probably search on here and get most all of what you need. I'm sure goose explained it once or twice in sufficient detail.

Stick around here and you can get lots of good advice. The best thing you can do is get with someone experienced or go watch a hunt test so you can see what "good" is. It makes it easier to get somewhere when you know what the destination is. Get a good book and remember that 90 % of training is obedience and you don't need the collar for that-it can come later if you decide to go that route. The collar does not train a dog contrary to some of the marketing. It is a tool to enforce already known commands just like a choke chain or heeling stick does. Make obedience a way of life at all times-no running free playing or doing things on his own terms. Make all activity supervised and revolving around retrieving and obedience training. This keeps bad habits from developing and gets them looking at training as something they look forward to.

I'm suprised that the club you contacted wasn't helpful. Everyone I've met at hunt tests etc has been extremely friendly and forthcoming with avdice and information. It's a shame you didn't have the same experience.

was probably one of them akc clubs. or some kinda closed group of field trialers. I find it extremely hard to believe that a uck/hrc would be anything but inviting. (although some may have a few smarta$$es included)

A feller from CO posts on a MS dog board bout a hand, and a feller from SD answers an email from a feller in TN bout it, and would have sooner but he was in NY judging a test.
