New Guy
New Guy
Hey Y'all, I am new to the forumn. I have learned more in reading posts in this forumn than I have in searching the internet for months now. I am not a Field Trial or Hunt Test guy, just want the best lab I can hunt with. Thanks for putting up some good discussion. I will be back for sure.

Welcome
Stick around. I lurk on a lot of forums and this place is great for getting help-especially if you "just want a good hunting dog" I hate to tell you but thats where the addiction begins. By all means ask some questions because we all learn from the responses. Good luck,
Bill

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Ok well I have a few questions. I currently have a 2 yr old yellow lab (Brooks), and a 1 yr choco lab (Gunner). We have done the fun fetching with each. Brooks has even gotten to doubles, but he is limited by my training abilities. I never did any FF with him, and did a shotty job at whistle training with both. Is it too late to turn these dogs into retrievers that I can really brag about?
Also, I am a lamen when it comes to training. Can some one explain the process of FF to me. I am reading Water Dog, but so far I have not come across anything that gives me a solid definition on this method.
Thanks again.

Throw that book in the garbage and get Milners first book. It tells you how to do it without a collar from day one through day whatever. Converts toe pinch to ear pinch to walking stick fetch. We can help you out after that and during.
You are starting handicapped not that their old just the wrong coler. hehehehe.
You have to FF, but you don't have to do anything else. Once you FF you'll want to do more. Welcome and good luck.

Welcome aboard Schemy. You can go to gundogsupply.com and get what ever you need. Personally I think you need 10 min retriever and the Evan Gramham Smartworks and Smart Fetch that would be the ticket. They are very by the step books. There are some very knowledgeable guys here so ask questions. Everyone here is willing to help. Also you should find a HRC club that is close to you and see about joining so you would have a training group. Just because your in a HRC club does not mean you have to run test. That would be a big help if you were around other guys and thier dogs.Good luck
what
are you kiddin??? milner don't FF dogs...... BWAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!! sorry, just couldn't resist.

Josh, he did when he was a wannabe field trialer... he found out that wasnt his schtick, and got on something that was, and 20 years later wrote another book... his new book ought to be in the fiction catergory... Amazing the same dude wrote both books.
colorado dude... you got sum geese on one of those shallow water rivers with those kick ass purple moutains in the background? Dat's the trip Im dying for.
I agree... find a local hunting reteriver club, and meet some dog people personally, and see what they got going on. Once you understand the end result, you can better understand the means. travis
