Made the big time.....kinda

Postby feather-chaser » Fri Jun 18, 2010 9:48 am

I don't really post here much guys, I just kinda lurk in the background like a creepy old man or something but I thought this might be worth mentioning. I am currently in Manitoba, Canada working for DW, doing nest searching and monitoring as a summer internship. Its a pretty sweet gig and a great opportunity as I hope to work as a waterfowl biologist once I get my Masters. Two days ago, Rob Olson, Jim Fischer, and Fred Greenslade came up and hung out with us for a while and interviewed and film some sketches of us (I'm assuming for their website). A couple of pics are already on their facebook and I hope the stuff will be on their website soon. Probably the best experience of my life.
These guys were down to earth, super cool guys who treated us like we were old friends. Anyways, just thought y'all might be interested in a hometown MS boy hangin with the big dogs.

If ya do see it, I'll be the goofy lookin guy with the MSU hat on.

Good job on the gig. Had a chance to meet rob and jim a few years back. Both super guys. Enjoy
If the birds are flying great, but if not, enjoy the time; at least you're not at work.

I worked on the predator research project in North Dakota in back in 2003 and 2004 when I was at State. I was a studentt research assitant for a grad student monitoring the nest success in trapped and non-trapped areas on the prairie. I enjoyed the hell out of it. I already knew John Devney when I started, but I got to meet Rob Olsen. He's a helluva nice guy, and pretty funny too. If that was a year-round gig, I would still want to be doing it. Nest searching and monitoring was a blast. You can't believe how sucessful spring trapping is on waterfowl nest success. We were getting almost 90% hatching success on the trapped areas and less than 12% on untrapped areas.

arduckslayer.... thats the same project I am working on now. Not a lot of success in recent years but they have lowered the block size down here in Manitoba and it seems to be helping. This has been an absolutely awesome summer. Rob and Jim were top notch and we'll be hanging out with pretty much the entire staff at the end of this month (staff meeting up here). I'm looking for a masters project right now and I hope I can find something as enjoyable as this. I've got some pretty sweet pictures Ill try to get up later.
