my 04 2500 HD does it also.

If you cycle the key like you are going to start the truck but stop before the starter reacts, you will see the speedometer go back about 5 miles. I do this until it hits zero.

Usually it will last about 2 weeks. It normally screws up if I travel with cruise control for a while on the HWY.

My dealer said 260 to repair.

It will not reset to zero, without the key cycle. You will see it move back just be slow when turnig the key.

My 04 HD started doing the same thing a few months ago. Now the needle is stuck on the bottom of the speedometer and won't move. I've just been driving without the speedometer just waiting for the inevitable question, "Son, do you know how fast your were going?" Well actually officer I have no idea.

$500 to fix it is mighty steep. I may just drive without it for a while and start rolling my pennies.

Chevies have problems, Fords have problems. It's all about the same. Maybe one of these Japanese companies will make a decent heavy duty truck one of these days.

one other thought.

if you go to http://dieselplace.com/forum/

and search for speedometer problems, there is a guy in CA that will fix it for about $180 plus shipping. You will be w/o the vehicle about 3 days.

Just another option.

same thing happened to My 04 z71's speedometer. Cost me 298.00. Talk to Curtis Robinson at Don Davis Chevy in Pelahatchie.
