Inexperience

Postby duckbuster330 » Fri Apr 13, 2007 8:25 am

I have a 10 month old yellow lab that I am wanting to get trained but i am not sure he is going to make it. He picked up a few doves in dove season at 3 months old. And retreived a few ducks during this past season. I have been working with him on the obedience and the retreiving but he seems to lose interest within about 20 minutes. One mistake I think I have made is i keep him in the fenced in front yard and not a pen and he plays with our other dog alot at night.. Somedays he does good and other days he acts like he just wants no part of it. I already have a trainer in mind and he has been mentioned several times on here as a very good trainer. But i am not sure if I should just start over with a new dog and just make this one a pet. I work offshore and have had a 2 or 3 day school or meeting every time I have been off for the last several hitches in houston and by the time that is over and all the honey do's are done it is time to go back to work. Just wondering if it would be worth it to take him to the trainer and see what he can do or just keep him a little longer as I dont want to waste my money and the trainers time on a dog that wont make it. any advice on this would be gratly appreciated. Like I said he acts like he wants to do it but I am totally inexperienced at all this.

What would it hurt to carry him to the trainer and let him see what he thinks about him. If you do plan on doing something, I would kennel the dog asap. You would be surprised at the difference it makes.

First thing I noticed was you say he loses interest after 20 minutes. Of course he will, especially at his age. Sessions should be no longer thatn 10 to 15 minutes.

Second, you need to get some training material, and follow it exactly, without skipping any steps.

Third, time is time.........if you don't have it to train, then you won't get the end result you are looking for. Being offshore will be tough.

I would talk with a trainer.

Actually it doesn't say, by how about calling her, if you are truly concerned instead of bringing it up here? What, you don't think she can walk the walk?

Butthead.

She has 3 numbers you can call for references if you dare.

Delena, I hope you have great success, and please ignore the ignorant arses in here who wish to ridicule anything and everything.

I don't think I would call someone an ignorant booty for asking a simple question. Isn't that a normal question while picking a trainer?

DIB, you are some kinda rude...
I asked a simple question because I did visit her website.

Would you take kindly to someone calling your mother a butthead??
You need to think about what you are saying before you open your mouth young man...

I'm pretty sure delna can answer for herself, dib. If she didn't want to speak on the subject, she wouldn't have spammed. There was no attack there... delena offered her services, sherri asked a question. It can't be both ways, if you want to publicly offer a service, you ought to be able to talk about your accomplishments or anything else regarding the service you offer. There wasn't an offer of services by phone or pm, why should there only be a question by pm? Only thing personally written was (yet again by you) calling other posters ignorant, and maybe an odd post I aint figgered out yet about writing a check???

face it folks, when people start offering business dealings, theres gonna be questions. If you want to be in front of the public, then enjoy the attention, good bad or indifferent. Dont offer bidness then say none-yur... makes no sense.

Since sherri has probably interviewed more pros than anyone on this board (she's totally anal about everything, and loves doing research) and hasn't posted a mean spirted thing on this board yet, seems to me her question was either guinine, or just simply curious. Either way I see no reason it should be private matter. Reading the website is fine, but doesnt mean you'd get the answer.. I didn't see the feathershy comment when I read it, and was wondering what prompted it on the first thread it was spammed in. Hell I still don't know what feathershy is, but got a good laugh out of the discussion. Maybe I'll get around to sending a pm to delena about it someday, would hate to raise anyone ire by questioning it here. travis
