Posession limits ???

Postby MemphisStockBroker » Mon Dec 02, 2002 3:25 pm

Maybe SB could give me some insight here.... If I go on a threee day weekend hunt, kill a limit each day (yeah, right).... I am over the posession limit - and in violation of the law, correct ?? 8)

What if I store my ducks in my freezer at my hunting camp? :? Can I only have 12 in there ?? Does a game warden have the right to check my freezer without a warrant?

I heard of some boys in Arkansas getting busted for breasting out their birds.... 'Wanton Waste' ... and not keeping the whole bird. Can't this get a little ridiculous ?
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

Hey Memphis I see this question wasn't directed to me, here's a link that might help explain these migratory game bird laws.

http://lula.law.cornell.edu/cfr/cfr.php ... t&value=20

According to this, a wanton waste violation doesn't have anything to do with the method of cleaning your ducks. I may be wrong about this, but I have always heard that a Wanton waste viloation typically occurs in conjunction with a shooting over the limit violation. For example, a warden catches a viloator who "stashed" birds in the field to be picked up later because he was over the limit that morning. Those boys in AR that you were referring to probably got a ticket for transporting duck breasts which are totatlly unidentifiable. A wing or head must be attached to the bird while it's in "transit".

Unfortunantly, the possesion limit is just that. I too have the same worries every time I go to AR (which is generally for 3 or more days at a time)

They are not going to come check your home for the possesion limit, but the Wardens do check duck camps on a regular basis over in AR. And I hear that it is happening more here in MS too. It's best to try to give away anything over your possesion limit while out of town.

Have a good trip!!!

The possession limit is a joke and should be done away with. If you are at the camp by yourself for a week and get 42 ducks, and the warden checks your freezer, you get fined and it's not right.

'Wanton waste'? heck i debreast every duck i kill except for woodies and teal, like to see you try to fine me for doing that.

The possession limit is twice the daily bag limit. It doesn't matter if your at the camp, at home or in Arkansas. One can gift them to family members at home, so they do not exceed the possession limit. Each family member may possess only twice the daily bag limit.

which is worse to them?

Postby dukdawgn » Mon Dec 02, 2002 7:55 pm

Which is worse? Breasting duks when you clean them, or dumping the carcus in the river? Either will net you a fine. Neither rule makes any since. I don't care how long you boil bones, you still can't chew on them any better. Don't know anyone who doesn't breast-out a duk. Don't know anyone who keeps the remains around the house, either. Pitching the remains in the river keeps the predators attention off the deer and duk population.

Sb, I am sincerely asking the question. I don't expect this to come into play but was just curious. If I have 5 family members does that mean that I can only have 10 limits of birds in my freezer (2 per person/hunter)?

Redeyed Duck: Yes, if you have 5 family members you could gift each the possession limit according to USFWS laws. The proper procedures must be followed of course. For those procedures and other laws go to the USFWS web page.

While I was in Stuttgart last year I took the dog out for a leak. We had him in the truck at the local hotel. I passes a game warden writting out some tickets to a handful of fellas who were cleaning ducks and pitching the carcasses in the dumpster. The birds had heads on them at least the ones I saw. I didn't ask exactally what was wrong. I can't imagine that being wanton waste.

AG&F will write tickets for breasting out ducks and tossing the rest. I dont agree with it, but they can and will. Haven't heard of MS doing that though.

The best thing for all concerned is to STOP shooting ducks. Yes that's right, just say no to shooting ducks - call me if you see some that need thinning
