Which youth model ??????

Postby Red Star » Thu Nov 16, 2006 9:06 am

Looking for a gun for my 7 yr. old son and I can't deceide. I was thinking Rem 870 youth 20 ga. Any suggestions or comments ? Where is the best place price wise to buy ? This will be his first season so I'm really looking forward to it.

Get an auto, so it will not kick as much.

Mossberg Super Bantam...has a removable peice of stock that reduces the LOP to 12". Also has EZ Reach forearm(Closer to the breach). 20 gauge pump comes with 3 choke tubes, Vent rib, camo, Built in sling mounts, has a slug barrel available and is scope ready. Model 500 stocks will fit as well, so, when Jr. gets older he has some room ta grow. My wife and 9year old son share one. It was the ONLY yute model she didnt seem to be reaching with when they took that piece outta the stock. I picked hers up at BSP Fall Sale for around $250

Franchi 720 Short Stock, 20 Gauge. Light auto that won't kick as hard as a pump. Pricey (around $650), but as they grow you can put on a longer stock. I bought one for my son (9) and he likes it much better than my old 1100 that I had the stock cut down to fit him.

I have a Benelli camo montefelto 20 gauge with a full set of Briley extended choke tubes that probably has been shot 50 times. If you are interested I will part with it. Should be perfect for a youth. Does shoot three inch shells.

depends on what you are wanting him to use it for. duck hunting only or duck hunting and deer. I bought my son a rossi single shot that comes with two barrels. a 243 and a 20 ga. he likes it. it has a little kick to it but not too bad. you can also buy other barrels for it like 12 ga, 30-30, 410,223 not sure what other barrels.

I started with a youth 870 20ga. I still have it and i killed my 1st everything with it deer, ducks, you name it. Good lil gun to start out with because you hardly ever have to clean it and those lil guns can take a beatn.

I started at 8 with a single shot 410. Which has been 3 other kids first guns now also. I have killed many ducks and dove with it and so have the other kids that have used it.
At 10 or 11 i got a Winchester youth Model 120 20gauge that i still shoot.

MHO, I say get him the small gun and work his way up.

the 870 youth model is a good gun, and shoots good also. they can take the abuse that youngsters and grown folks alike will give them. I have two of them in my household and have had no trouble and shot tons of shells through them.
