I am gonna try it!!

Postby duckamateur » Tue Mar 22, 2005 7:21 pm

I know after doing a search everyone is gonna say save your $$$ and buy a Chapman Pirogue. The boat I need is 400 from Chapman and I think I can do better than that, it may not last as long, but if I build it for half and it lasts 75% as long then I am money ahead! I have been reading books and getting advice from a few people who should know what they are doing, and I think I can build one cheaper and better. If not then it will be a lot of bought experience. I have always liked building things myself to hunt out of and have fallen into a rut here lately and have been buying things instead of building them(jdbuckshot reminded me of things I can do), a rut that is easy to fall into when overtime is rampant at work. So everyone wish me luck and don't be a-holes about it, wait till the finished product is posted!!! It may turn out great and may turn out a piece or CRAP!!! I will be the first to post up that it is a piece of crap and let ya'll know that I am making a trip to Chapman's!!!!!

I built one last summer- epoxy and fiberglass over 1/4" plywood. It turned out better than I expected, and it even floated! It worked out great this past season, and beat the heck out of wadin thru 2' of water over a foot of mud. The fiberglassing was a bigger pain than the woodworking. I have about 150.00 in it. Check compositsusa.com for your epoxy and glass- they had the best prices.

Sweet looking pirouge there jb! Good luck da, hope the project goes well. I am a bit challenged when it comes to working with wood. Guess I'll have to buy one when the time comes.
