It saddens me to anounce that the 98er is no longer taking members and actually will be drastically reducing its roster due to recent downturns in the market...

Honestly...up until about early 1990s...very little poaching was done in the Tallahatchie County area...at least by locals in my part of the county...you just hunted where ever ducks were...your land, neighbors land, his neighbors land....much simplier times. I killed a big buck one morning (88 or 89) and was glad two of my neighbors were duck hunting the brake from which the island I killed the deer on was sitting. Never crossed my mind to ask what are yall doing hunting those ducks in our brake. What did come to mind was that they looked like they had an awesome hunt by the looks of the green they were toting and I did not have to lug this deer out by myself. They heard me shoot and decided to investigate. Made my day! Too bad this generation of our sons and grandsons will not experience that "community" belonging we did growing up. Sure there were a few properties scattered here and there that were "no-no" places, but by and large it was a great time with much space to chase critters in. Are a few younger boys...hmm, younger men around home hunting or rotating around on each others property together chasing waterfowl these last two years. Hopefullly they continue to do so.

I can remember going scouting after school. Finding ducks and calling up ole so and so and asking permission. 9 out of 10 you got a go ahead. Nowadays you find a field with water, there's a 99% chance the only reason it's flooded is cause it's leased. And gawd forbid you ask permission to put some boards in a field or two to hunt and not have a fist full of cash. Ole so and so will now look at you like you called his momma a whore. The times they are a changing.

If we are getting technical here novacaine, a Level I is more of a reference and I'd say a level II is a technicality. Neither are worth even looking for me. On the other hand you will have to be pretty slick to catch me on a Level III. The last I pulled involved climbing out of a high fence and back into another...

What I meant by the deplorable farm practices is from my experience of what I get to see on a daily basis on many farm in LA, although the little I work in MS I have seen it here also. The use of buffer strips along streams is becoming a rare practice, particular perennial RPWs. The lack of enforcement of the swamp buster act among some DC's, the list goes on. Obviously not all farms and farmers contribute to the problem or such practices. Although there is plenty out there that do.

How many of you have watched them when dredgeing the tallahachie? I have, the banks fall in just about as fast as they dredge the bottom out, i dont see how they make any progress, on the up side , we have some awesome dove hunts on the sandpiles they create.
