MSU's Frazier out for season

By Ian R. Rapoport

STARKVILLE — When Winsome Frazier limped off the court against Ole Miss, his Mississippi State teammates prepared for the worst. This afternoon, they got it.

Frazier, the MSU senior shooting guard, is not expected to play for the Bulldogs again, coach Rick Stansbury said before today's practice.

"He's out for the season," Stansbury said. "He's going to have a screw inserted into his foot (Tuesday) morning. He's out."

Stansbury said junior college transfer Jamall Edmondson or sophomore Dietric Slater will replace Frazier in the lineup when MSU travels to Tennessee Wednesday.

The Bulldogs' second leader scoring averaging 14.1 points per game going into the win against the Rebels, Frazier went up to block a Justin Johnson shot and came down limping. He tried to shrug it off, but as he said following the game, "I couldn't walk."

Frazier had X-rays taken at 1 p.m. and walked into the practice complex on crutches today following the trip to the hospital. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Miami native declined comment. Trainer Scott Johnson also referred comments to Stansbury.

It's not just his offense and 3-point prowess — he scored 30 points against Missouri-Kansas City, for instance — the Bulldogs will miss. Frazier is the SEC's reigning steals leader and was tabbed by several preseason publications as the SEC's best defender.

Now, the Bulldogs expect to go on without him.

"Without him, it's going to be much more difficult," Stansbury said. "You're talking about the second-leading scorer, our best 3-point shooter, best perimeter defender, quickest athlete and toughest guy on the team. We'll miss him but nobody's going to cancel the game for us."

Those reserves are going to have to step it up big time now.

Rest assured, either Edmondson or Slater will step up and do the job. It'll probably make the rest of the team more determined than ever!!!

Don't you just hate that for Winsome. He is the most likeable guy. The dude has a wife and kids here with him, I'm sure they are just broken

I wish college athletics had more players like him, he worked hard and acted like he had some class about him. It's a real shame...

we'll miss him for sure. it might be easier to replace his 14pts per game average, but it'll be hard as hell to replace the defensive pressure. thangs look a lot more bleak now. thats part of being a msu fan

I hate it for MSU, but I hate it for Winsome more....he truely loved playing the game and we are going to have a hard time replacing him! In a game with a lot of hot heads and thugs Winsome has always seemed like a coolheaded hardworker that you could depend on! Slater will be a good replacement...all he needs is a little time and maturity and that guy is going to shine!

bigwater hit the nail on the head. Stans can replace his points, but the defensive pressure is his best attribute

I look for Stans to move Power to the 2 guard and put Harp at #3. The Ervin/Edmonson backcourt is way too small and Slater will foul out if he plays 10 consecutive minutes.

I like Slater but he needs to get off of whatever he's one come time for him to get in the game.

It is gonna hurt, but hopefully we can play through it. Like somebody said earlier, the points can be replaced, but i don not know if wer can replace the energy and the defense??
